On the evening of November 10, the Vietnamese futsal team unfortunately lost 0-2 to the Indonesian futsal team in the final match of the AFF Futsal Cup 2024, thereby failing to win the championship for the first time in the Southeast Asian arena. On the contrary, this is the second time the team from the archipelago has won the championship in this tournament, after 2010.
On all fronts, this is the 5th time a Vietnamese national team has lost to Indonesia in 2024.
Previously, at the 2023 Asian Cup (taking place in January 2024), the Vietnamese team under coach Troussier lost 0-1 to Indonesia in the group stage and could not participate in the knockout round.
In the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup (taking place in March 2024), Quang Hai and his teammates continued to lose two consecutive matches against the team from the archipelago, with a score of 0-1 at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium and 0-3 at My Dinh Stadium. This result also made Mr. Troussier decide to leave the "hot seat" of the Vietnamese team before the end of his contract.
In the Southeast Asian U16 youth arena, Vietnam U16 under the guidance of coach Tran Minh Chien lost 0-5 to Indonesia U16 in the third place match. This result disappointed many fans. After that, Mr. Chien also stepped down as captain, giving way to new coach Cristiano Roland.
Notably, the Vietnamese women's futsal team is the only team to defeat Indonesia in 2024. Accordingly, Bien Thi Hang and her teammates won a resounding 5-1 victory over their opponents at the NSDF Women's Futsal Championship 2024 friendly tournament last September.
According to the schedule, in mid-December, the Vietnamese men's team will continue to face Indonesia in the group stage of the AFF Cup 2024.
