At noon on June 11, coach Nguyen Duc Thang posted a notice of farewell to The Cong Viettel club on his personal page, concluding his emotional journey with the army team.
In his article, the strategist born in 1976 confided about his decision to part ways: "I thought a lot before saying goodbye to my former teammates, staff and students at the club".
I personally am always proud to serve the team, both as a coach and a former player of The Cong. Although we accepted to return in countless difficulties, we have all tried together to overcome everything. I am very happy and joyful because my last return is also meaningful.
Now, as the season is almost over, the team is stable and the season's goal is still ahead, I will once again choose to say goodbye like 14 years ago. I wish everyone in The Cong Viettel club good health, happiness and more success."
This short but emotional message shows Mr. Thang's respect and attachment to his former team, where he was a part of history, both as a player and coach.
According to information from the team, this is the proposal of coach Nguyen Duc Thang. The official decision will be announced in the next few days.
Previously, at the end of April, The Cong Viettel appointed coach Velizar Popov as head coach. At the same time, coach Nguyen Duc Thang moved to the role of Technical Director, in charge of youth training.
In his career, coach Nguyen Duc Thang has made his mark when leading Saigon, Thanh Hoa and Binh Dinh clubs. In 2015, he led Saigon to the First Division championship and won a ticket to play in the V.League. He is also a person with merits in discovering and training young talents such as Quang Hai and Dinh Trong from the early days of the Hanoi T&T youth team.
In early 2024, he was invited back by The Cong Viettel as head coach and helped the team finish in 5th place in V.League 2023-2024.
