Strengthening protection of fishing workers

Kiều Vũ |

Hanoi – On January 24, the Vietnam Fisheries Trade Union requested that local Fisheries Trade Unions strengthen protection for workers after a fisherman was tied up and beaten to death.

Speaking to Lao Dong Newspaper reporter, Mr. Do Tien Dung - Vice President of Vietnam Agricultural and Rural Development Trade Union, President of Vietnam Fisheries Union said that immediately after receiving information about the incident of a fisherman being tied up, beaten to death and then his body thrown into the sea, Vietnam Fisheries Union sent a document to the Kien Giang Provincial Labor Federation.

The document stated: According to electronic newspapers, Kien Giang Provincial Police received a report of a murder that occurred in the waters of Kien Giang. The victim was a fisherman who was tied up, beaten to death, and then his body was thrown into the sea. According to the authorities, at the end of 2024, due to personal conflicts, 6 people tied up, beat, and threw Mr. T. into the sea until he lost consciousness before being brought up for CPR and treatment, but the victim died.

In response to the above actions, the Vietnam Fisheries Union protested against the inhumane treatment, disregard for the law, beatings, and threats to the lives of fishermen by the above subjects and requested the authorities to investigate and strictly handle the cases to avoid similar incidents.

In order for union members and fishermen to feel secure in their fishing activities at sea and to have timely protection measures in case of personal conflicts at sea, the Vietnam Fisheries Union respectfully requests the Kien Giang Provincial Federation of Labor to direct district-level Federations of Labor and grassroots Fisheries Unions to strengthen propaganda and protect the legitimate rights and interests of workers, ensure harmony of interests between ship owners and crew members, pay attention to resolving disputes arising from fishing at sea, raise awareness of the fishing community and society in protecting aquatic resources; comply with legal regulations when fishing at sea.

At the same time, increase the provision of information to competent authorities such as Border Guard, Fisheries Sub-Department, People's Committees at all levels, Fisheries Unions... about similar incidents or signs of disputes and conflicts during the process of fishing at sea for timely resolution, avoiding unfortunate consequences.
