On December 27, at the emulation summary conference of Emulation Cluster No. 7, the Trade Unions of 6 provinces in the South Central region (Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan) said that in 2024, the units in the Cluster had newly established 298 grassroots trade unions, developing 64,500 union members, of which the actual increase was more than 34,500 union members.
According to Mr. Bui Dang Thanh - Vice Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial Trade Union, only 2 units achieved 16/16 targets assigned by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor in 2024, namely Quang Nam and Quang Ngai, the remaining units were stuck in the unit development target. The unit development target in Phu Yen province even fell to a negative rate of 14.9%.
“2024 is a difficult year when many businesses in Phu Yen have to temporarily suspend operations, go bankrupt, workers lose their jobs, and change jobs, causing the number of union members to decrease significantly. Therefore, despite recruiting more than 5,000 union members, the target is still not achieved,” explained Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Huyen, Vice President of the Phu Yen Provincial Federation of Labor.
According to Ms. Huyen, through survey and understanding the situation in the province, there are still more than 1,000 enterprises without trade unions. Of these, more than 600 enterprises have only 5-7 union members, and the remaining enterprises have less than 25 employees, so it is very difficult to mobilize union members and establish grassroots unions.
Mr. Phan Xuan Quang - Chairman of the Quang Nam Provincial Federation of Labor said that up to now, the province has admitted nearly 15,500 new members, an increase of about 11,000 members compared to the end of 2023, reaching more than 102% of the target assigned by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor (10,600 members); newly established 50 grassroots unions and trade unions. In the group of solutions, the Trade Union in Emulation Cluster No. 7 also aims to establish trade unions in freelance labor sectors.
According to Vice President of Ninh Thuan Labor Federation Nguyen Huu Hoa, Binh Dinh has the second largest number of fishing vessels in the country with more than 6,000 fishing vessels. This is a large area for the locality to continue developing trade unions. In 2024, the unit has established 4 fishing trade unions and will continue to focus on developing union members and trade unions in this area, hoping to overcome difficulties in the target of trade union development next year.
Acknowledging and sharing the current difficulties and obstacles of Emulation Cluster No. 7 in the work of developing unions, Mr. Huynh Thanh Xuan - Vice President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor suggested that the Trade Unions of 6 provinces have solutions to focus on the informal sector to develop unions and establish grassroots unions.
“In the coming time, I suggest that units focus on developing Party members, participating in building a clean and strong Party, considering this a vital issue for the Trade Union organization. Along with development, we must pay attention to innovating and improving the quality of Trade Union activities; doing a good job of taking care of the material and spiritual lives of workers to retain them…” Mr. Huynh Thanh Xuan emphasized.
