Apple could surpass Samsung by 2025

Apple is expected to surpass Samsung and become the world's top smartphone maker next year.

Apple’s sales are expected to get a significant boost from the launch of the low-cost iPhone SE 4 in 2025, priced at around $499. In addition, shipments of older iPhones in emerging markets like India will also give Apple a boost.

According to the latest global smartphone market share data for the second quarter of 2024 from market research firm Counterpoint, Samsung remains the world's largest smartphone maker with a 19% market share, followed by Apple (16%). However, in previous years, Apple has often taken the lead with its annual iPhone launch event.

According to research published in October 2024 by market research firm Techinsights, Apple is likely to maintain its growth momentum in the first two quarters of 2025. Thanks to that, they can surpass Samsung to become the world's largest smartphone manufacturer.

“One of the key factors in Apple’s predicted success is its aggressive price cuts, especially in China, one of the most important markets for smartphone makers. Apple has successfully stabilized its performance in the region, by offering older iPhone models at more competitive prices and meeting growing demand for affordable premium devices.

“As Apple continues to balance the launch of new flagship models with the sale of older versions at a discount, it has been able to retain and expand its user base. This strategy has not only boosted sales but also strengthened the brand’s position in emerging markets, where price sensitivity is a major driver of consumer choice,” Techinsights commented.

It is expected that by 2025, Apple will not only capture more market share but also break sales records when the iPhone SE 4 and iPhone 17 series are launched. While the iPhone SE 4 and older models have a clear price advantage, Apple has also increased sales of the iPhone Pro series compared to the regular models.

Recently, Apple also opened the largest research office outside the US, based in Shenzhen, China. This center has an area of over 20,000m2, will recruit more than 1,000 experts, both domestic and international. This is a strong move by Apple to create stronger competition with local phone manufacturers in China - the world's largest smartphone market.
