Apple removes two controversial dating apps from the App Store

NGUYỄN ĐĂNG |

According to TechCrunch, two controversial safe dating apps, TeaOn Her, have been removed from the App Store.

The removal of these applications was first discovered by the application caloties Appfigures. These two apps have been removed from the App Store in all markets but still exist on Google Play.

Apple also confirmed the removal of the apps, saying it has removed Tea dating Advice and TeaOn Her from the App Store because they do not meet Apple's requirements for content censorship and user privacy. The company also said that it has received too many complaints and negative reviews from users, including complaints about the personal information of minors being posted on these apps.

Apple has notified app developers of the issue, but the complaints have not been resolved.

Tea and TeaOn Her have created a lot of headlines and attention since becoming popular earlier this year. Tea, which has been quietly around since 2023 before becoming popular in 2025, is advertised as a safe dating tool for women.

This application encourages women to share information about men, especially on dating apps. However, many men dislike the privacy infringement of the app and question whether sharing information like this can be considered defamation.

After becoming popular and controversial, Tea had a data breach in the summer, when hackers accessed 72,000 photos, including 3,000 self-portraits and identification documents with photos sent to verify her accounts, as well as 59,000 photos from posts, comments and direct messages.

A rival app called TeaOn Her was later launched to give men the ability to flirt with women in a similar way, but the app encountered security issues that exposed users' personal information, including government ID and self-taking photos.

Appfigures said that the Tea app has reached a total of 6.1 million downloads during its operation and generated a total revenue of 5 million USD to date. TeaOn Her reached 2.2 million downloads and did not provide in-app shopping features. The company notes that these apps are still active on Google Play.

However, after being removed from the App Store, fake apps are increasingly attracting attention. For example, an app called TeaOn Her and Him - Overheard has reached a total of 354,000 downloads and has jumped from 90th place on the Overall Top App Chart to 27th place.
