According to the Telecommunications Authority (Ministry of Science and Technology), after nearly 2 months of implementing subscriber confirmation on VNeID, about 1.6 million phone numbers have been confirmed by people not to be used. This is also one of the issues that surprised many people when they first checked their subscribers.
Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Van Hung (Hanoi) said that he logged into the VNeID application to check subscriber information after reading information related to SIM authentication before the June 15th milestone.
However, what surprised him was that in addition to the phone number he was using daily, the system also displayed another subscriber that he did not remember to have registered before.
I am quite worried because I don't know when this number was registered and who is currently using it. If that phone number is related to transactions or violations, then the person named is still me," Mr. Hung shared.
Not only Mr. Hung, many users said that the first time they accessed VNeID, they discovered that there were more phone numbers in their names but they no longer used them or completely did not remember them.
More than 1.6 million numbers confirmed unused
Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Anh Cuong - Deputy Director of the Telecommunications Authority (Ministry of Science and Technology) said that so far there have been about 1.6 million subscriber numbers confirmed by users not using their own owners.
According to Mr. Cuong, this is one of the notable initial results after the implementation of Circular 08/2026/TT-BKHCN.
Through the VNeID application, people can look up all phone numbers that are in their names, thereby confirming the numbers they are using and detecting numbers that are not under control. This has helped telecommunications businesses review and handle more than 1.6 million numbers confirmed not to be used.
According to the Telecommunications Authority, allowing people to proactively check and confirm the subscriber status is an important solution to limit the situation of non-genuine SIMs existing for a long time.
What if you discover a strange SIM card in your name?
According to the explanation of the Telecommunications Authority, in case an individual sees the subscriber number appearing on their VNeID but does not actually use it, that person can choose to confirm "Not used".
After having confirmation from the registrant, the telecommunications enterprise will continue to notify the user of the subscriber number to re-enact information standardization and verification according to regulations.
The verification process can include many steps such as authentication using an OTP code sent to the subscriber number, comparing service usage information, contact history or other information to identify the correct person using the phone number.
According to the Telecommunications Authority, the goal of this process is to ensure that the subscriber number is associated with the correct actual user, while protecting the rights of the legal entity. However, there are still about 25 million subscribers who have not been confirmed status on VNeID by users.
The management agency recommends that people proactively access the application to check phone numbers that are in their names, confirm the numbers they are using and handle subscribers not under their control.
Verification not only helps avoid risks related to non-genuine SIMs but also contributes to protecting personal information in the context of the subscriber review process being promoted nationwide.
