According to a report from KDVR ( via Reddit), a 53-year-old man climbed the top of Snowmass Mountain, Colorado. However, during the downward journey, he suffered an injured wrist and could not continue his journey.
In remote areas without mobile or Wi-Fi services, he used Apple's satellite messaging feature to contact a family member. The family then reported it to the sheriffs' office and the Aspen Mountain Rescue Team.
The emergency coordination center has received a warning and dispatched rescue workers to the area at an altitude of nearly 11,000 feet (over 3,300m). According to the report, the injured man could not walk on his own and was taken to a safe place by rescue workers.
Rescue experts emphasize that having an emergency device or knowing how to use satellite messages can speed up the rescue process.
The Emergency SOS feature on iPhone shows its usefulness in situations like this. This feature helps reduce response time by allowing victims to communicate directly with rescuers.
Apple's satellite SOS feature is available on iPhone 14 and later. Apple Watch models do not support satellite connectivity, but many models offer mobile safety features.
For example, Apple Watch series 5 models or later, Apple Watch SE or Apple Watch Ultra can make emergency calls independently.
Additional features such as collision detection, fall detection, and alerting on Apple Watch Ultra models help keep users safe, by alerting rescue workers or attracting attention in case of an emergency.
