In the general digital transformation trend of the country, digital media plays an important role in the information and propaganda of the Party and the State. Digital media with 3 popular forms: social networks, websites and mobile applications have been and are making an important contribution to disseminating and updating information to people and spreading humane and positive values.
Social networks - where young people express their patriotism and revolutionary spirit
Thanks to the support of digital platforms, young people today are free to create content, from articles, videos, impressive images to inspirational media campaigns to demonstrate patriotism and express gratitude for the sacrifices of their ancestors to protect the independence of the Fatherland. Notably, there are shares on social networks that attract millions of views.
Many young people have expressed their patriotism and national pride, revolutionary spirit through songs, videos of them impersonating the images of national heroes, soldiers, policemen, or even heroic Vietnamese mothers on the background music of songs such as "Aspirations of Youth", "Vietnam's Pride"... These videos not only express the pride, patriotism and desire to contribute of young people, but also urge them to learn about the meaning of symbols and historical figures, revolutionary figures, thereby feeling more proud of their origins and cultural heritage.
Many trends such as "Taking photos with the national flag", "Every roof becomes a national flag" with thousands of videos created in a short time... These videos have reached millions of views, showing the great interest of the social network community in content expressing patriotism and revolutionary spirit.
The trends that young people spread through social networks are very familiar but also very new, full of their own personality and create good effects, helping to raise awareness of history, culture, national values, and revolutionary spirit. This proves that no matter what generation, no matter how it is expressed, love for the Fatherland and love for the revolution are always in the hearts of every Vietnamese person.
Journalism in the age of digital media and social networks
Despite its many positive aspects, social networks also contain many risks and challenges. With simple registration and usage, users only need a computer or smartphone with internet connection to freely express their opinions and personal views on social networks anywhere, with anyone, at any time without being controlled or restricted. Taking advantage of this, many subjects and organizations against the Party and the State use social networks as a tool to provide and share fake and untrue information, causing confusion in public opinion. Such negative information has even infiltrated rural and remote areas. Fighting against bad and toxic information is not only the task of authorities but also an important task of press agencies.
Press agencies play an important role in publishing information to refute anti-government arguments and false information, while actively promoting the Party and State's policies and laws. Dr. Dinh Thi Xuan Hoa - Institute of Journalism, Academy of Journalism and Propaganda said: "Participation in building content on cyberspace, especially on social networks, by press agencies plays an extremely important role and significance in the propaganda activities of the Party and State's policies and guidelines. With a large source of information produced daily, utilizing social networks as a communication platform helps press agencies improve propaganda efficiency, reach a larger number of users, contribute to creating a mainstream information flow on social networks, repel bad, toxic and destructive information, and contribute to "cleaning" cyberspace".
Currently, many social media sites of press agencies have come into operation and brought many positive results. Long-standing press agencies such as Nhan Dan, Lao Dong, VTV... have shown a strong transformation when owning social media sites that are widely followed and supported by the public. Most newspapers have caught up with the trend of applying technology and building long-term strategies to widely distribute press content both domestically and internationally on social media and other digital platforms such as websites and mobile applications (apps). These are reliable addresses for users to update official information, update policies and laws of the Party and State.
In the 100-year history of formation and development (June 21, 1925 - June 21, 2025), the Vietnamese revolutionary press has always affirmed its role as a sharp ideological weapon of the Party and State, always closely associated with and accompanying the cause of the Party and the nation; a bridge between the Party, the State and the people; a forum for the people to participate in Party building and social management. In the new context, changing the methods and ways of communication in digital space and social networks is a mandatory requirement, requiring press agencies to change and transform, contributing to improving the effectiveness of propaganda, spreading the thoughts, policies and laws of the Party and State, spreading humanistic values to millions of users in digital space and social networks.
According to Datareportal, as of February 2024, the number of social media users worldwide has increased to a record 4.9 billion people. This number in Vietnam is 77.93 million people, accounting for 79.1% of the total population. Of which, the number of Facebook users accounts for 91.6% and TikTok accounts for 77.5%. Vietnam also ranks 5th among the countries with the largest number of TikTok users in the world. With the rapid growth of social media platforms, the public's habits of searching for and receiving information have also changed significantly. Accordingly, the trend of internet users in Vietnam has changed from reading printed newspapers, watching TV, listening to radio in the traditional way to entertainment and updating information on digital platforms and social networks.
