If your body experiences unusual signs when using functional foods (FF), you should stop using the product and consult your doctor.

Side effects of dietary supplements

Dietary supplements help maintain optimal health and prevent complications related to vitamin and mineral deficiencies. However, if you do not research carefully and ignore the doctor's advice, you may experience side effects when using them.

Dr. Payal Chaudhary - senior consultant, obstetrician and gynecologist at Rainbow Children's Hospital (India) - shared some effects to note when using dietary supplements:

- Vitamin C is generally considered safe, but high doses can cause digestive problems such as diarrhea and stomach pain. It can also lead to a risk of developing kidney stones in at-risk people.

- Vitamin B12 supplements are generally well tolerated, but some people may experience side effects such as nausea, diarrhea or headache.

- Omega-3 supplements derived from fish oil can cause a fishy taste, bad breath, and indigestion. They can also increase the risk of bleeding in people taking blood thinners.

- Iron supplements can cause constipation, nausea, and stomach upset. In rare cases, they can lead to iron overload, especially in people with genetic conditions such as hemochromatosis.

“Other supplements such as herbal remedies, weight loss aids or hormone-based supplements can have potential side effects, including allergic reactions, hormone imbalances,” says Dr. Chaudhary.

Signs that dietary supplements are not suitable for your body

Dr. Chaudhary points out some signs that the dietary supplement you are using may not be suitable for your body, including:

Digestive disorders: Abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, diarrhea or constipation are common signs when the body cannot absorb dietary supplements.

Rash or itching: Some ingredients in dietary supplements can cause skin allergies, rashes, hives or itching.

Fatigue, dizziness: Feeling tired or dizzy may occur if the body is unable to absorb or process the ingredients in the dietary supplement.

Headaches: Headaches can be a sign when the body reacts negatively to certain supplements.

Weight changes: Some dietary supplements can affect weight changes, such as sudden weight gain or weight loss.

Sleep disorders: Dietary supplements may contain stimulants or ingredients that alter the body's circadian rhythm, leading to insomnia or restless sleep.

Increased blood pressure or heart rate: Some dietary supplements, especially weight loss or health products, can increase blood pressure or heart rate, causing discomfort.

Liver or kidney problems: Some ingredients in dietary supplements can put stress on the liver or kidneys, causing symptoms such as jaundice, dark urine, and persistent fatigue.

If you experience any of these symptoms, you should stop using the product and consult a doctor or nutritionist to determine the cause and find a suitable solution.
