Hormonal changes, the body is at a loss
If you have ever found yourself becoming irritable, sad or easily crying during the "red light" days, you are not alone. According to Dr. Nirmala M, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Manipal Hospital (India), the cause lies in two key hormones: estrogen and progesterone.
In the first half of the cycle, estrogen gradually increases to prepare for ovulation. progesterone then continues to increase to support the lining of the uterus," Dr. Nirmala explained. When eggs are not fertilized, both hormones drop sharply, causing the lining to peel off and form menstrual blood. This decrease makes women feel abdominal pain, fatigue, or emotional sensitivity.
Common symptoms include chest tightness, insomnia, cravings for sweets or increased anxiety. This is the body's natural reaction when hormones fluctuate strongly.
How to reduce hormonal storms each month
Dr. Nirmala M believes that although they cannot prevent hormonal changes, women can completely reduce discomfort by adjusting their lifestyle. A balanced diet rich in green vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins helps stabilize blood sugar, thereby improving mood, she said.
Light exercise, especially yoga or brisk walking, also helps the body produce endorphins - a happy hormone, helping to reduce stress and menstrual cramps. In addition, getting enough sleep and limiting caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco can help the cycle become more stable.
Prolonged stress is considered a catalyst that makes premenstrual symptoms worse. Therefore, taking time to relax, meditate or listen to light music is also an effective way to help women overcome this sensitive period.
