This year's school year takes place in a very special context, not only associated with the event celebrating the 80th anniversary of National Day on September 2 but also with the signing of Resolution 71 on breakthroughs in education and training development, on behalf of the Politburo.
In the 6 guiding viewpoints of this Resolution, there is a very new and important viewpoint: Education ensures harmony between the people and the elite, comprehensiveness and expertise, nation and globalism. Develop education on the basis of culture, traditional national values, while absorbing the quintessence of humanity, international standards; educate and train Vietnamese citizens to become global citizens.
First of all, the concept of global citizen is not only understood as a Vietnamese person who is able to study or work abroad, but needs to be understood as a Vietnamese person with modern knowledge, international integration skills, and the ability to dialogue and cooperate with the human community.
They are also people who know how to respect differences, know how to join hands to solve global hot issues such as climate change, peace protection, sustainable development, etc.
A Vietnamese person who wants to become a global citizen must possess all the key factors including: good at foreign languages, knowledgeable about technology, critical thinking and creativity; knowing how to preserve Vietnamese cultural identity; having independent thinking and aspiration to rise up; having community responsibility...
In this sense, to "educate and train Vietnamese citizens to become global citizens", our education needs a strong and synchronous change in philosophy and methods.
In particular, many issues have been raised and implemented in recent years, needing to be promoted to achieve faster practical results such as: switching from studying for exams to studying to have knowledge and skills to live, work, and contribute.
Next, it is necessary to focus on global skills such as foreign languages, digital skills, cooperation skills, life skills, etc.
The education system, especially Vietnamese universities, needs to further expand international cooperation, creating conditions for students to be exposed to international standards, exchange culture, and experience many different environments.
Finally, the most important thing is to integrate with pride in cultural identity, national origin, knowing how to respect Vietnamese, history, and culture, so that when entering the world, I can be confident and proud to introduce who I am and where I come from. Avoid the situation of integration into dissolvement, and then "global citizens" become grandparents and great-grandparents who are completely " Westernized".
Resolution 71 of the Politburo has opened up a great vision. To start this school year, we have the right to expect that in the future, schools will be a place to nurture not only students who are good at knowledge, but also contribute significantly to the formation of generations of Vietnamese people who know how to preserve national identity, while confidently integrating, joining hands with humanity to create a better world.
