Currently, some provinces and cities have announced the third subject of the 10th grade entrance exam in 2025. In Can Tho City alone, the Department of Education and Training (DET) has chosen English, which is also a subject that is being prioritized by localities.
Sharing with Lao Dong, Ms. Diep Thai Quynh - English teacher, Luong The Vinh Secondary School, Ninh Kieu District - commented that the fact that the Department of Education and Training of Can Tho City chose English as the third subject for the 10th grade entrance exam this year has many meanings both in terms of reality and long-term orientation.
“As an English teacher, I am not too surprised by this decision, because in recent years, English has increasingly become a core subject, in line with the trend of international integration. This also reflects the need to improve students' foreign language proficiency, creating better conditions for them in the future,” said Ms. Thai Quynh.
According to Ms. Thai Quynh, most students today are well aware of the importance of English - an international language. They study not only to pass exams but also to use it in daily life and prepare for future study and work opportunities. Many students have participated in English proficiency training classes outside of school.
On the other hand, Ms. Thai Quynh said that choosing English as the third exam subject certainly sets higher requirements for students.
First of all, students need to master all four skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing), especially basic grammar and vocabulary knowledge in the curriculum. At the same time, they need to practice time management skills when doing the test, understand the test structure, and focus on the types of questions that often appear.
Besides, you need to be disciplined and have a clear review plan, update appropriate documents, and especially persevere in improving your weaknesses.
Some other teachers commented that with English becoming the third subject, competition among students will also be fiercer. This requires students to have thorough preparation and effective review strategies.
Nguyen Ho Hoai Nhu - a 9th grade student at Luong The Vinh Secondary School, Ninh Kieu District - shared that English is a subject that is heavily invested in and is familiar in exams, most students have prepared early and carefully from previous years.
“For me, no matter which subject I choose for the third exam, it requires serious concentration and review. For English, we have enough time to prepare, study and review, so I think that this year's exam will give you a higher score,” said Hoai Nhu.
Choosing English as the third subject for grade 10 is an important step in improving the quality of education and meeting the demands of society. Although this places higher demands on students and increases competition, it also creates motivation and opportunities for them to develop comprehensively.
2025 is the first year that students graduating from the 2018 General Education Program will graduate. The Ministry of Education and Training has issued new, unified nationwide junior high school and high school admission regulations.
Accordingly, for the entrance exam to grade 10, if choosing the entrance exam format, the exam will include Math, Literature and a third subject (or a combined exam); this subject is selected by the Department of Education and Training from the subjects evaluated by scores, but a subject cannot be selected for more than 3 consecutive years.
