Fierce debate over suspension of students for disciplinary violations

Thùy Chi |

The issue of whether to suspend students from school for violating discipline is still receiving mixed opinions from public opinion and from students themselves.

On July 6, 2025, the reality TV show "Truong Teen" - a controversial playground for high school students - officially returned to VTV7 with the 8th season. Right at the opening match, the program attracted strong attention when choosing a topic that is causing much controversy in public opinion: "Schools should not suspend students from school for students who violate discipline", originating from the new draft Circular of the Ministry of Education and Training.

The two teams from Wellspring Inter-level School (Hanoi) and Phan Chau Trinh High School (Da Nang) brought a vibrant, emotional and convincing debate match.

Proponents from Wellspring believe that suspending students from school does not help them change their behavior but can cause psychological damage, creating negative consequences. Instead, they propose alternative solutions such as psychological counseling, behavioral support programs to accompany students in the process of correcting mistakes.

On the other hand, Phan Chau Trinh's team strongly opposed, defending the view that suspending learning is a necessary measure to maintain discipline and ensure school safety. They emphasized that this is also the time for students who violate to review their behavior, thereby having the opportunity to correct their mistakes and mature.

The match received high praise from experts thanks to sharp arguments, flexible critical skills and confident demeanor of the contestants of both teams. This confrontation once again affirms the appeal of " teen School" - where young people are allowed to try their hand, express their independent thinking and social responsibility towards hot educational issues.

July 6 is also the deadline for contributing to the new draft of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) on regulations on rewards and discipline for students. In the draft, the removal of forms of criticism of students in class, school and suspension is attracting many mixed opinions. Although many people welcomed the humanity, many opinions expressed concern: if the discipline is too light, students will easily disregard the rules and "grate the law".

According to experts, the core issue here is the balance between discipline and humanity. Schools cannot be too strict to become a court, but they cannot be too easy to profit to become an un disciplined place. Forms of handling violations need to be both educational and deterrent, creating conditions for students to correct their mistakes in a safe environment.

A good school environment is where students are respected and listened to, but there needs to be a clear line for them to understand that: freedom does not mean lack of discipline. Discipline - if done properly - will not be a punishment, but a first-time lesson in responsibility, consequences and self-respect.

"Truong Teen" season 8 will continue to air at 11:00 every Sunday on VTV7 and will be updated on VTV7's official YouTube channel.
