On August 7, in Da Nang City, the Ministry of Construction coordinated with the Asian Invalids and War Invalids Prevention Organization - AIP to organize an international workshop on "Training on safety assessment and implementation of solutions to improve traffic infrastructure and traffic organization in school areas".
Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Hoang The Tung - Deputy Director of the Department of Transport and Traffic Safety (Ministry of Construction) said that road traffic accidents are a global problem, especially for school-age children. According to statistics from the World Health Organization, nearly 1.3 million people die in traffic accidents each year, causing a loss of about 100 billion USD. In Vietnam, in 2024, there will be more than 2,000 accidents involving children, killing nearly 900 children.

According to Mr. Tung, implementing the direction of the Prime Minister in Directive 31/CT-TTg (issued on December 21, 2023) and Decision 2060/QD-TTg on the strategy to ensure traffic order and safety for the period 2021-2030, the Ministry of Construction is coordinating with localities to review traffic infrastructure conditions, organize traffic on national highways passing through school areas, and make a list of high-risk points to overcome.
At the same time, according to the Plan to implement Directive 31/CT-TTg of the Ministry of Transport (issued in Decision No. 64/QD-BGTVT dated January 22, 2024), specialized agencies will propose solutions to ensure the safety of students at schools.
Mr. Tung emphasized: The international workshop on safety assessment and implementation of solutions to improve traffic infrastructure and organize traffic in school areas is a practical activity for specialized traffic safety officers, representatives of road management areas, project management boards... to share experiences, propose solutions, contributing to ensuring traffic safety around school areas.
At the training session, the contents were deployed to contribute to ensuring the safety of Vietnamese students on their journey to school. The main content revolves around introducing practical tools and knowledge to improve traffic safety in school areas, including:
Traffic Safety Handbook for School Areas: This is a set of technical documents issued by the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Construction) in August 2023. The document has been widely used in transport infrastructure renovation projects in many school areas across the country.
Big Data Screening method: This method applies artificial intelligence (AI), satellite images and 360-degree Street View images to analyze, filter and rank risk factors for pedestrians at the community level.
School Star Rating Method (SR4S): This is an assessment tool developed from the International Road Rating Program (iRAP), allowing specialized staff to assess and manage risks related to traffic safety. This method is also one of the core contents mentioned in the School Area Traffic Safety Handbook.
