Why is the garbage collection point near the market?
Dong Xa market (Phu Dien, Hanoi) is one of the largest markets, with a large concentration of traders and daily shoppers. Located in a favorable location, the market provides a variety of products from vegetables, meat, fish, fruits to dried products to serve the needs of people in the area.
The market has three entrances, including a main gate and two side gates. However, the most notable is the side gate area facing Tran Vy Street, where a large garbage collection point exists. This landfill is located right next to stalls selling fresh products such as shrimp, shrimp, fish and flowers.

During peak hours in the morning and afternoon, traders often collect items discarded during the sales process into bags and bring them to the gathering area. At around 5pm every day, garbage trucks and environmental staff will come to collect, which usually takes 15 to 20 minutes depending on the garbage.

In addition, arranging a garbage collection point right next to the shopping area helps sellers more conveniently during the cleaning process, especially at the end of the day when the amount of garbage increases.
Environmental pollution, risk of food pollution
Gathering garbage right next to a traditional market also causes many consequences.
According to Lao Dong reporters, at 12:00 and 16:00 consecutive days, at this garbage collection area, a strong stench was coming out, black leachate was flowing from garbage trucks.
More worryingly, right next to the gathering point, there are also some temporary stalls, displaying goods directly on the ground for trading.

Fresh food stalls such as vegetables, seafood, etc. are spread out on the ground, not ensuring hygiene. The stagnant, widespread garbage water around the area not only causes loss of aesthetics but also poses a potential risk of pollution, directly affecting food quality and consumer health.
According to observations, sellers have spread nylon underneath to avoid food coming into direct contact with the soil. However, trading near the garbage collection area is a temporary solution due to limited market area.
In reality, this area still has many potential risks for food hygiene and safety, especially during hot weather, waste is quickly decomposed, causing a strong smell.
Need to handle soon
Faced with the above situation, the local government and the Dong Xa market management board plan to meet to discuss in order to soon come up with a more reasonable plan to move or cover the garbage collection point.
Many people in the area hope that the authorities will strengthen periodic cleaning and supervision of garbage collection in the area, especially during peak hours, so that Dong Xa market becomes a safer, cleaner and more civilized trading space.
Talking to Lao Dong reporter, Ms. Nguyen Thi Loi, Head of Residential Group No. 3 (Phu Dien Ward, Hanoi) admitted that there was a situation in the area as reported by the reporter.
"We have noted the people's reflection on this situation and will soon report to the local authorities, proposing to issue documents to propagate people to collect garbage at the time the cleaning company collects, to avoid the garbage spreading all day long.
In addition, in the long term, we will also propose that the government organize meetings with departments and branches to come up with appropriate solutions as soon as possible" - Ms. Loi said.
