Taking advantage of geographical location, Vietnam is making efforts to modernize the seaport system to become a global logistics center.

Promoting the application of AI in seaport development

Speaking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Le Quang Trung - Deputy General Director of Vietnam National Shipping Lines (VIMC) - said that Vietnam's logistics infrastructure is being focused on developing to become an important point on the world freight transport map.

The development of the seaport system is associated with the overall planning of transport infrastructure, which promotes the development of connectivity with road projects with railway. The smooth connection between types of transport and navigation contributes to promoting Vietnamese goods trade and the world, especially in the region such as China, East -West connection, or connected across the border with Laos and Cambodia.

Currently, Vietnam has strongly developed port systems as well as inland waterway transportation systems, while owning Gateway gateway port centers and starting to develop transit port systems.

"With this synchronous development, I highly appreciate the opportunity for Vietnam to become an important logistics link in the world" - Mr. Le Quang Trung assessed.

Mr. Le Quang Trung added that to develop logistics infrastructure, Vietnam needs to take a shortcut first. Not only developing traditional models but also needing a breakthrough in thinking. In particular, Vietnam needs to pay special attention to increasing value on technology platforms, digital transformation and applying AI to techniques related to transportation, packaging and services for goods.

Sharing this view, Mr. Tran Van Ky - Chairman of the Board of Directors of hateco, a large private enterprise in the field of logistics and information, hateco, inaugurated hateco Hai Phong international container port, one of the leading modern seaports in Vietnam last April. The maximum exploitation capacity reached 2.2 million Teus/year and at the same time received 2 container ships with the largest capacity in the world.

One of the secret to business success is the application of AI, digital transformation. Build a port according to a green - smart model. In the coming time, when investing in other port projects, the unit will continue to promote these factors.

Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Xuan Sang shared that maritime infrastructure not only has the participation of state-owned units but we also mobilize a large number of private enterprises to participate. Currently, private investment capital in maritime infrastructure is up to 86%.

The leaders of the Ministry of Construction said that in the near future, we need to focus on investing in synchronous infrastructure connecting seaports including roads, waterways, and high-speed railways. Synchronous investment activities will contribute to the socio-economic development of the whole country.

International friends recognize

Vietnam's efforts in developing seaports have been recognized by international friends. Mr. Nicolai Prytz, Danish Ambassador, said that Vietnam has made important contributions to the green transformation goal, with an ambitious focus on sustainability, through advanced green technologies, automation systems and a steadfast commitment to the environment and reducing emissions.

Chairman of Maersk Company (the world's largest container transport company), Mr. Robert Uggla expressed: "Vietnam is emerging as a country with great potential for production and trade. In Vietnam, we are not only building infrastructure, we are creating conditions for businesses, creating jobs and connecting Vietnam with the world".

Maersk is committed to cooperating more deeply with Vietnam in the coming time. "We will explore innovations in seaport operations, logistics networks and sustainable solutions that benefit the Vietnamese economy. We are ready to share our best experiences and global leadership in digitalization, green transformation and supply chain resilience," Mr. Robert Uggla emphasized.

Compared to 2000, the number of ports in Vietnam has increased by 5 times, reaching 300 with a total length of about 107km. The seaport system is not only developing rapidly in quantity but also improving capacity and service quality. In 2015, the volume of goods passing through the port reached 427.8 million tons. From 2016-2020, the volume of goods passing through the port increased by 61.8%, an average increase of about 10% per year.
