Young people and distance from historical films, revolution
It is undeniable that a part of young people today is less exposed to historical films and revolutionary wars of Vietnam. In a small survey conducted at a number of universities in Hanoi in 2023, only about 15% of students said they had seen a whole revolutionary movie in the past year. Meanwhile, most of their entertainment time is for foreign films, especially film series on digital platforms.
The cause has a lot. First of all, the content and appearance of many revolutionary films are still heavy in propaganda, have not gone in depth and depict the character and fate of the character. That makes viewers, especially the younger generation find it difficult to connect. Next, the fierce competition from modern entertainment platforms makes it harder for revolutionary films to get attention.
In an environment where multi -dimensional information and fast speed today, historical films with slow rhythms, lack of unexpected twist or visual effects do not get attention from the audience. In addition, the lack of effective communication strategies is also one of the reasons that this film series has not reached the audience.
When historical films, the revolution stepped out of the path
Facing that fact, Vietnamese filmmakers have made great efforts in renewing the revolutionary film series. From modern rotation techniques, vivid sound, to how to build multi -dimensional characters, more interesting plot - all aim to bring the stories of history to be closer to young audiences.
The film "Do not burn" (2009) directed by Dang Nhat Minh, based on the diary of martyr Dang Thuy Tram, not only causes strong emotion but also contributes to the image of the revolutionary soldier becomes more vivid with the younger generation with a true and emotional story.
In 2023, the film "Dao, Pho and Piano" directed by Phi Tien Son, set in Hanoi in the winter of 1946, created a box office fever thanks to a positive communication effect as a testament to that revolutionary film, when elaborately, enthusiastic, can completely reach the audience.
And especially, most recently, the heat of the movie "Tunnels: The Sun in the dark" - director Bui Thac Chuyen - open from 4.4 to the morning of 8.4 (according to Box Office Vietnam) has earned over 81 billion VND, far beyond the film and foreign films released at the same time.
Escape from the hard propaganda, the film recreated quite honestly the fierce atmosphere of the war, the spirit of sacrifice, the courage of the Cu Chi guerrilla team with the tunnel system - a unique people's war form. The tunnel - an underground world that people have dug by hand, with the power of wills and intense beliefs.
It is a symbol of resilience, solidarity and patriotism. At the same time, the harmony of the atmosphere, music, sound, artistic design and uniform acting of the cast: Thai Hoa (as Bay Theo), Quang Tuan (Tu Bu) and especially young actress Ho Thu Anh (as Ba Huong) helped "Tunnels: The sun in the dark" becomes the most popular film in the historical film, the revolutionary war, but the people who have not seen the people in the last 10 years. In myself an extraordinary internal force.
What to do to make historical films, revolutions attract young people?
From the success of a number of historical dramas, revolutionary wars recently can see, to attract young audiences, to create empathy in the journey to experience the work as a approach, learn and proud of the heroic history of the nation.
History does not necessarily be told in a dry language. The films have a tight script, a character with depth, natural lines, combined with impressive visual elements that will create more appeal.
Besides, instead of just showing or broadcasting traditional television, bringing revolutionary films to social platforms such as YouTube, Tiktok, Netflix, Galaxy Play or Vieon will also help young people access easier. You can choose the segments, scenes, short clips ... full of emotions, contain clear messages, to spread in the online community.
Historical film screening combined with schools, or contests to learn about historical figures through movies, to evoke patriotism, is also a solution. In addition, the promotion of films needs to have attractive communication campaigns, using influential people (Kols) youthful, creating content suitable to the psychology and language of young people.
From screen to action
Patriotism is not an abstract concept or only exists in the arduous moments of the nation. For young people today, patriotism needs to be durable from awareness to specific action. Revolutionary film, if done properly, can become a catalyst for that process.
First of all, the revolutionary film arouses emotions - the initial step of empathy and awareness. When young people watch the films recreate the sacrifices of young soldiers such as in "do not burn" or the battle, the courageous sacrifice of guerrilla team members in the heart of the tunnel - "Tunnels: the sun in the dark", they not only know more about history but also feel true people, true fate. That emotion, when touched, will be the source of empathy and respect for the past.
From empathy will form a civic consciousness - expressed in responsibility for society and the country. A young person, after watching historical movies, can start learning more about the events and characters they have never known. From that curiosity, they gradually form a long -term concern to historical values, the development of the country, and realize their role in preserving and protecting those values.
Many young people after watching revolutionary movies have participated in community activities, wrote articles to share their feelings about history, or participate in competitions to learn about national traditions. The patriotism here is not in the slogan, but in the transformation of emotions into specific behaviors - serious learning, responsible life, volunteering, environmental protection, spreading good value through social networks.
In particular, in the context of Vietnam integrated deeply with the world, patriotism among young people also expressed through the desire to rise to confirm the Vietnamese identity, not being dissolved in a multicultural world. Revolutionary films, if told in contemporary languages, can arouse national pride, motivate young people to constantly strive to bring the image of the country to the world. Patriotism, national spirit in every citizen as an underground circuit never run out, persistent and enduring, affirming the vitality of Vietnamese people and the people of Vietnam.
