At the end of 2024, the People's Committee of Quang Tri province approved the sidewalk renovation project of Hung Vuong Street in the old Dong Ha city (now Dong Ha ward, Nam Dong Ha) with a total investment of 126.5 billion VND from ADB loans and counterpart capital of the Vietnamese Government, invested by the Provincial Construction Investment Project Management Board. The implementation period is until September 30, 2025.
The project has a designed length of 5.04km, starting from the intersection of Hung Vuong - Tran Hung Dao streets, ending at the North of Vinh Phuoc bridge; sidewalk width on each side is 6m. The section from Ly Thuong Kiet Street to Dien Bien Phu Street will only build a sidewalk on the left side of the route, the right side will remain in its original state.
To implement the project, it is expected to cut down 259 trees, relocate 282 trees and then plant 432 new trees. Currently, 95/259 trees have been cut down, and none have been relocated (67 trees have had their canopy cut down, waiting for the site to be handed over for relocation). The section from Tran Hung Dao Street to Ngo Quyen Street will keep the trees growing well, the types of trees and the suitable location on the sidewalk; plant additional trees to replace damaged and unsuitable trees.
The investor said that the newly planted trees will be implemented after the sidewalk is paved. The trees that were cut down will be implemented at the same time as the construction of the technical hao; the trees that need to be relocated will be selected for a new location, cared for for a few months, then planted in a suitable place.
During the construction process, some people complained and did not agree to cut down and relocate the trees that were still green. Through inspection, the Department of Construction determined that many trees need to be replaced because they are not on the list of urban trees or are planted in unreasonable locations; the trees will be retained.
The leaders of the Department of Construction said that they have asked the Project Management Board to work with the People's Committees of Dong Ha and Nam Dong Ha wards to agree on a plan.
" any trees that are not suitable for sidewalks or hinder the construction of underground items must be cut down and relocated; suitable trees must be kept. We have directed the review and agreement with the locality before continuing implementation" - said the leader of the Department of Construction of Quang Tri province.
