On November 22, the Vietnam Publishing Association held a press conference to inform about the 7th National Book Awards Ceremony.
At the press conference, Mr. Nguyen Nguyen - Director of the Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution - said that in 2024, 51/57 publishers had books participating in the Award (10 more publishers than the 6th National Book Award).
The number of books participating in the 7th National Book Award is 372 titles and book series, including 455 books (60 more titles and book series, 20 more books than the 6th National Book Award).
Based on the voting results at the National Book Award Council, the Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution and the Vietnam Publishing Association have compiled and submitted to the Minister of Information and Communications for consideration to award the 7th National Book Award in 2024 to 58 books and books that won 59 awards, including: 03 A Prizes; 10 B Prizes; 21 C Prizes; 21 Encouragement Prizes and 04 Readers' Favorite Book Awards (with 01 book winning 02 award categories).
Sharing about the large proportion of translated books in the structure of works submitted for the competition and winning prizes, Mr. Nguyen Nguyen commented: "Translated books account for a certain proportion in each genre, accounting for about 37% of the total number of works proposed for the prize.
For the publishing industry, the mission is not only to honor and spread culture and national identity but also to receive the quintessence of human culture and integrate into the world. All three books that won A prizes this year are works by Vietnamese authors. The National Book Award keeps up with the world publishing trend but also honors and recognizes the contributions of domestic authors."
This year, the new feature of the National Book Awards is that the organizing committee added the Readers' Favorite Book Award category, nominated and voted by readers themselves. The Vietnam Publishing Association organized to receive nominations from readers on the official website of the National Book Awards, receiving over 100 books nominated by readers.
From the scoring results of the Preliminary and Final Councils, the National Book Award Council carefully studied the scoring records, the review documents of the works nominated for the A prize, discussed and voted to select the award-winning works.
Mr. Do Quang Dung - Vice President of Vietnam Publishing Association - expressed his wish that the National Book Award will continue to develop and create a strong influence on readers.
"Through 6 seasons of organization, the organizing committee tries to attract as many publishers and authors as possible to submit works for the contest, while also updating the world's cultural quintessence through translated books by international authors. Our goal is that the works must be increasingly better and of higher quality.
We also encourage books to have new publishing directions to meet the needs of readers. Publishing development is the premise for reading culture to develop. That is also the goal we aim for when organizing the National Book Awards," said Mr. Do Quang Dung.
The 7th National Book Awards ceremony consists of 2 parts: the Gratitude Ceremony and the Official Award Ceremony. The Gratitude Ceremony aims to recognize and praise the great contributions of authors, translators, publishers, bookmakers, businesses supporting the Awards and journalists in creating good works, valuable books; promoting and fostering the development of reading culture.
The 7th National Book Awards 2024 ceremony will take place on November 29 at the Hanoi Opera House.
