Beauty regardless, not safe
The 108 Military Central Hospital has just admitted a 44-year-old female patient to the emergency room after receiving an anesthetic injection for a nose filler injection at an illegal cosmetic facility. The patient was diagnosed with grade III anaphylaxis to Lidocaine and was treated simultaneously with both anaphylaxis and anesthetic poisoning protocols, using vasopressor adrenaline and 20% lipid emulsion along with other emergency resuscitation measures.
Doctor Nguyen Tien Son - Emergency Department, 108 Central Military Hospital - said: In the above case, the patient was fortunate to receive proper, timely and active emergency care, thus avoiding unfortunate consequences.
At the Department of Dermatology - Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital, on average, we receive more than 100-150 visits per day, including many cases of complications due to filler injections for treatment.
At the Department of Plastic Surgery, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, the number of emergency cosmetic surgery complications also tends to increase.
Medical facilities have recently recorded many cases of cosmetic complications as a result of these "underground" spas, mostly due to the psychology of wanting cheap prices, believing in "sweet" enticements online, and then "losing money and getting sick".
According to statistics from the Vietnam Association of Plastic Surgery, the rate of complications is 14%, equivalent to 25,000 - 35,000 cases out of a total of about 250,000 people undergoing cosmetic surgery each year.
Cosmetic complications occur even with simple cosmetic techniques.
At the annual HPASS International Scientific Conference organized by the Hanoi Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery on October 12, Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Quang Vinh - Deputy Director of Le Huu Trac National Burn Hospital, Head of the Department of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery - Military Medical Academy said that in fact, cosmetic surgery is like any other type of surgery, it has risks. Cosmetic procedures can lead to various complications, from unsatisfactory, unnatural surgical results, to scarring, and even death. In addition to the general risks of surgery, complications related to anesthesia are the leading cause of death in cosmetic surgery. The risk is very small but still exists, and that is why patients need to choose reputable facilities to perform cosmetic procedures.
With the potential risks of unsafe cosmetic surgery, Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Quang Vinh said that this conference aims to create opportunities to meet, exchange and improve the knowledge and experience of surgeons in general and cosmetic plastic surgeons in particular.
Prof. Dr. Tran Thiet Son, Department of Plastic Surgery (Bach Mai Hospital), Chairman of the Hanoi Plastic Surgery Association, said: Complications in cosmetic surgery are common when cosmetic techniques are not performed by professionally trained doctors and are not performed at licensed facilities. These complications tarnish the image of the cosmetic industry.
Any intervention carries risks. In cosmetic surgery, common complications are infection, deformity, deformation in the cosmetic location, bleeding and most dangerously, death. Therefore, he recommends that customers with beauty needs can choose reputable facilities that have been assessed and licensed by competent authorities to ensure their rights, legitimate interests and most importantly, their health and life.
