Bach Mai Hospital and Nam Dinh University of Nursing agreed to establish a Joint Working Group to develop a merger project, aiming to strengthen the link between training and clinical practice and scientific research. The draft Project is expected to be completed and reported to the Ministry of Health before September 20, 2026.
Towards a model of institute - school linking training with practice
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Xuan Co - Director of Bach Mai Hospital - said that the merger of the two units is in line with the development orientation of medical human resources according to a closely linked model between training, practice and scientific research.
The combination of resources of Bach Mai Hospital with Nam Dinh University of Nursing, a facility with specialized strengths in nursing training, is expected to create a closer link between the training facility and the practice facility.
Currently, Bach Mai Hospital has nearly 5,000 officials and employees, serving about 5,000-5,500 inpatients and 8,000-10,000 outpatients every day. The hospital is also developing facilities in Ninh Binh, expected to complete phase 1 by mid-2027.
Along with a team of professionals and a modern medical equipment system, these are considered important resources for developing training, practice and research activities in the institute-school model.
Continue to promote strengths in nursing training
Dr. Truong Anh Tuan - in charge of Nam Dinh University of Nursing - said that the school agrees with the merger policy. However, the project development process needs to ensure the inheritance of the achievements that the school has achieved after many years of construction and development.
The school proposed that the merger project should clarify important contents such as legal basis, organizational and governance model, autonomy mechanism, organizational structure and operating assurance conditions, and must be consistent with the provisions of law on higher education.
Regarding training, Nam Dinh University of Nursing proposes to continue to promote strengths in Nursing and Midwifery majors. In addition, the school may study a roadmap to expand more training majors in accordance with the development orientation of Bach Mai University of Medicine and Pharmacy.
This is considered one of the important contents to take advantage of the school's nursing training strengths, while expanding the capacity to train medical personnel in the future.
Formerly Nam Dinh Medical School, established in 1960, Nam Dinh University of Nursing has now trained more than 15,500 bachelors, more than 500 masters and 50 doctors of nursing. Currently, the school has about 5,000 students and 18 practice facilities nationwide.
The study of about 5,000 students currently studying at Nam Dinh University of Nursing must be maintained stably. Student rights, training programs and the value of diplomas need to be guaranteed in accordance with legal regulations, while minimizing disruptions that may arise during the transition process.
The school also proposed to study a tuition fee roadmap suitable to actual conditions, and at the same time have policies to care for and support students in difficult circumstances. Currently, this group of students accounts for about 30% of the total number of students of the school.
Ensuring the rights of learners is identified as an important requirement for the merger process to take place stably, without affecting the learning process and training plans of students.
The Institute of Medical Training and Research under Bach Mai Hospital is assigned to be the focal point to coordinate with Nam Dinh University of Nursing to develop the Project. The working group will review the legal framework, resources, organizational structure, facilities, training programs, teaching staff and learner rights, and complete the draft to report to the Ministry of Health before September 20, 2026.
