How can one clove of garlic per day help protect the heart

Eating garlic every day can help reduce blood pressure, cholesterol and protect cardiovascular health, but it needs to be used correctly and in the right dosage to achieve the best effect.

Supports blood pressure and cholesterol reduction

According to nutrition studies, garlic contains many sulfur compounds and antioxidants, which help dilate blood vessels and improve circulation. As a result, eating garlic regularly can contribute to reducing blood pressure, especially in people with hypertension.

In addition, garlic also has the ability to support reducing bad cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein) and triglycerides, factors that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. The main mechanism is that garlic helps inhibit the cholesterol formation process in the liver, while reducing and increasing cholesterol absorption from the body.

Ms. Amy Brownstein - a master of science, nutritionist in the US - said that most research today focuses on high-dose garlic supplements. However, using fresh garlic in your daily diet can still bring certain benefits to your cardiovascular health.

Protect blood vessels, reduce the risk of atherosclerosis

Not only affecting blood pressure and blood fat, garlic can also help slow the formation of plaque in arteries, the main cause of atherosclerosis. When plaque accumulates, the lumen of the vessel becomes narrowed, hindering blood circulation and increasing the risk of myocardial infarction or stroke.

Garlic also helps improve endothelial function, the cell layer lining inside blood vessels. This is an important factor in helping blood vessels constrict and expand flexibly and maintain stable circulation.

Professor Jeremy Pearson - Deputy Director at the British Heart Foundation - said: "The biological compounds in garlic can support blood vessel health through their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. However, garlic cannot replace cardiovascular medication.

According to recommendations, eating about one to two cloves of garlic per day is safe for most adults. Garlic can be added to dishes such as soups, stews, stir-fried vegetables or cereals to enhance flavor and nutritional value.

However, experts also note that people with underlying diseases, taking anticoagulants, or preparing for surgery should consult a doctor before using garlic regularly.

In general, garlic is a food that is beneficial for the heart if used properly. Maintaining a balanced diet combined with a healthy lifestyle is still a key factor in protecting long-term cardiovascular health.
