What you eat not only affects your waistline but also shapes the way your brain works. Nutrition plays an essential role in brain health, because the body and mind are closely linked.
Over time, consuming certain unhealthy foods can reduce memory, cause loss of concentration and even reduce nerve cells.
Neurologist Robert Love (working in Florida, USA) has shared three popular foods that can harm the brain over time. He affirmed that many people are unintentionally damaging their brains with just daily eating choices.
1. Seed oil and ultra-processed foods
According to Robert Love, seed oils such as peanut oil, canola oil, corn oil or refined vegetable oils are all processed at high temperatures, creating inflammatory compounds.
Inflammation is a leading risk factor for Alzheimers disease, warned Robert Love.
Not only oil, most ultra-processed foods such as fast food, cookies, and snacks contain these oils, making them especially harmful to the brain.
2. Refined sugar
Robert Love recommends minimizing refined sugar, because the human body is not designed to handle high sugar levels. He said: The natural sugar in fruit is very good for the brain, especially organic fruit.
But refined sugar can increase insulin, increase blood sugar and cause inflammation, all of which damage nerve cells.
3. Alcohol
Alcohol is a direct cause of memory loss and sleep disorders, two vital factors for brain health.
Nearly 50% of adults in the US drink alcohol regularly, which means a large part of the population is exposed to neurotoxins every day.
Alcohol not only impairs memory and sleep but also disrupts the gut microbiome, which is closely linked to the brain, Mr. Love explained.
According to the expert, the important thing is not absolute dieting but awareness of the effects of food on the brain.
A diet rich in green vegetables, organic fruits, fatty fish and natural nuts will help reduce inflammation, improve memory and increase concentration.
