Patient P.T.C (40 years old, Dong Thap province) was transferred to Cho Ray Hospital in a state of severe shock and blood loss, multiple injuries with slash marks on the chest, back and two arms, in which one hand was completely severed. The other hand was severed near the knee, leaving only part of the skin and bone bridge. Immediately after receiving the treatment, the hospital activated the hospital-wide red alert procedure to coordinate handling. After receiving a blood transfusion and stabilizing the blood flow, the patient was quickly taken straight to the operating room.
BSCK1 Tran Phuoc Binh - Department of Orthopedic Trauma, Cho Ray Hospital said that this is one of the most complicated and stressful surgeries. The surgery lasted 12 hours with the participation and coordination of all 3 surgical teams of the Orthopedic Trauma Department.
The first team initially treated both limbs, cleaned, fixed bones and prepared for micro-surgery. At dawn, the hand micro-surgical team continued to connect blood vessels, nerves and tendons to the 2 hands.
With the right hand (right) nearly severed, the doctors performed bone fraction, reconnecting blood vessels and nerves under the microscope. However, if the hand (left) is completely severed, there will be more obstacles due to complex damage and unstable blood circulation, at times the team has to reopen the surgical incision to reconnect the blood vessels.
At 1pm the next day, the surgery ended successfully, both hands were pink, warm and had good signs of survival. After 10 days of limb surgery, the patient continued to undergo additional skin transplantation. Currently, after a period of physical therapy for rehabilitation, monitoring vital signs, the patient's condition is stable, both hands are healthy, the patient was discharged from the hospital on November 6.
Talking about the methods to treat this patient, BSCK1 Tran Phuoc Binh - Department of Orthopedic Trauma, Cho Ray Hospital said that the technique of severed limb joint surgery by micro-surgery is a form of "super surgery", requiring high skills and modern equipment.
Recently, injuries received at the Department due to fists have tended to increase, mostly related to conflicts after alcohol use. However, not all cases are treated successfully if they have not received timely first aid and the right method.
Doctors recommend that when an accident unfortunately occurs, the initial proper first aid step is very important. Accordingly, the patient needs to have the wound blood taken, quickly store the severed limbs with clean bang and place in a sealed plastic bag, then put the bag in a box of ice (not soaked directly), and quickly transfer the victim to a medical facility capable of performing micro-surgical procedures for timely treatment and treatment.
