Turmeric and fish oil are two popular supplements used by many people to improve overall health. But when combined, whether they create outstanding effects or simply add benefits. Some recent studies have shown that this combination can support cardiovascular health, brain function, reduce inflammation and control blood sugar.
According to pharmaceutical Dr. Ross Phan, an expert at UCSF University of Pharmacy, USA: Curcumin in turmeric and omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil both have strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. When combined, they can support each other in improving many body functions."
Good for the heart and blood vessels
A 2024 clinical trial found that the use of fish oil (containing 500 mg EPA and 200 mg DHA) along with nano-curcumin (80 mg) helped reduce bad LDL cholesterol levels and increase good HDL cholesterol. Although the combination does not provide superior results compared to individual ingredients, simultaneous use still brings a clear improvement to blood lipid levels.
Enhanced brain function
Another 16-week study found that fish oil helps speed up information processing, especially in middle-aged men. Curcumin improves language memory. However, according to Dr. Leigh Weddle, a clinical pharmaologist at the University of Washington, the combined effects are not really clear: There needs to be more research with larger participants to confirm the resonance effects between these two substances.
Support blood sugar control
People who take curcumin or combine it with fish oil have significantly lower post-meal blood sugar levels than those who take pharmaceuticals. Insulin levels are also more stable. However, fish oil alone does not have a clear impact on blood sugar.
Reduces inflammation and joint pain
The combination of fish oil and turmeric has been shown to reduce the level of protein reaction C (CRP), an index that reflects inflammation in the body. In addition, fish oil also helps relieve joint pain caused by osteoarthritis. Curcumin can provide additional support, but the effectiveness depends on the individual.
Side effects to note
Although rare, some people may experience mild side effects such as nausea, bloating or indigestion when consuming turmeric or fish oil. Turmeric sometimes causes digestive disorders, while fish oil can cause bad breath or mild diarrhea.
