The family situation of Ms. Ha Thi Nguyet (living in village 13, Lien Son commune, Gia Vien district, Ninh Binh) makes many people feel sorry when both her husband and son have cancer.
Ms. Nguyet’s family is a near-poor household in the commune. The family’s life is already full of challenges with rice planting, working for hire, and just enough to maintain daily meals. Her husband, Mr. Nguyen Van Manh, used to be a healthy worker, but since 2022, he was diagnosed with colon cancer. Ms. Nguyet had to sell all her belongings, mortgage her house, and borrow 90 million VND from the bank to pay for her husband’s surgery.
He thought that after the surgery, his condition would be stable, and the couple would work together to pay off their debts and provide for their children's education. However, after a while, Mr. Manh started having excruciating pain again and now he still has to go to Hospital 108 to receive chemotherapy at a cost of tens of millions of dong each time.
While Ms. Nguyet was trying to cope and run around to take care of her husband, disaster struck again. At the end of 2023, her son, Nguyen Ha Minh Duong (born in 2019), was also diagnosed with kidney and spleen cancer.
"When I heard the doctors say that my child needed urgent surgery, costing nearly 300 million VND to maintain his life and hope for recovery, I was almost speechless and had to take him home to take care of him. Seeing my child struggling with pain every day was heartbreaking, but I was also helpless because the family's finances were exhausted," Ms. Nguyet choked up.
Since her son was diagnosed with cancer, Ms. Nguyet had to send her 16-year-old daughter to Phu Tho for her grandmother to take care of because the family's circumstances could not afford to pay for her education.
It was painful to see her husband and son gradually wither away, but there was nothing she could do but try to earn money from manual labor jobs to take care of her husband and children. But with the little money she earned, it was only enough to cover daily living expenses, and for Ms. Nguyet's family, treating her husband and children's illnesses was a distant dream.
Every time she saw her husband and son struggling with pain, she secretly wiped away her tears, not wanting them to know that she was also desperate.
For her, there is no greater pain than that of a mother and wife, having to witness her loved one suffering from a terrible disease every day without being able to do anything.
Ms. Nguyet's life now revolves around the word "hope". Hope that a miracle can happen, hope that her family will receive help from benefactors and donors...
Speaking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Bui Xuan Lai - Vice Chairman of Lien Son Commune People's Committee said that Ms. Nguyet's family is one of the families with especially difficult circumstances. Both her husband and child have cancer. "Currently, her family is a near-poor household in the commune. We are reviewing and considering putting her family into the poor household category of the commune starting from 2025," Mr. Lai said.
