In Gia Khanh village (Thuong Phuc commune, Hanoi), the situation of Ms. Tran Thi Hung (born in 1959) makes many people feel heartbroken.
Ms. Hung lives alone in a rented house, without land, without husband and children, facing illness and loneliness.
At the age of 67, Mrs. Hung should have been able to rest after a lifetime of hardship. But the reality is long nights of shortness of breath, survival pills and daily worries about food and clothing...
When Mrs. Hung was 8 years old, her parents divorced. That upheaval made her childhood precarious from a very early age. She lived with her grandmother, then relied on relatives. At the age of 16, she had to drop out of school due to difficult circumstances...
Ms. Hung's teenage years were associated with days following adults to plant cassava along the Da River. At the age of 18, she both farmed and worked as a worker to earn a living. At the age of 20, she joined the youth volunteer force... The years of youth passed in heavy labor, but she never thought her life would be so full of hardships.
Heart failure has been with her since childhood, and as she gets older, it becomes more severe. Recently, Ms. Hung was diagnosed with osteoporosis, lung disease, diabetes, reduced vision in her left eye, and gradually worsening memory. Her body is often tired, back pain, leg pain, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. "Every night I have to take medicine to sleep. Many times when I am lying down, my chest feels tight, I can't breathe, at those times I am very scared, I just wish someone would take care of me...", Ms. Hung choked up.
In 2020, while climbing a chair to burn incense, the chair suddenly swayed, causing Ms. Hung to fall, break her leg, and have to be hospitalized for treatment. "At that time, the State supported a part of the money for medicine, and relatives from near and far also came to visit, so I overcame the hardship," Ms. Hung recounted.
Currently, she does the job of rolling votive paper at home, her monthly income is only about 400,000 VND, some months even less. Meanwhile, the minimum medicine cost is also about 200,000 VND/month. Without social assistance, no pension, no house, Ms. Hung has to save every penny to maintain her life.

Ms. Hung added that her younger brother - Mr. Tran Xuan Hoa - the remaining close relative, has suffered from mental illness for many years and cannot work. The family was originally small, now it is even more desolate.
All her life silently, until old age, Mrs. Hung is still alone in a rented house. Every time the weather changes, bone and joint pain rushes in, making it impossible for her to stand upright, and walking is also precarious. However, if she lets go of work, even for just one day, she will not have money to buy medicine to survive. Just like that, between illness and food and clothing, that woman silently struggles in a vicious circle of not knowing when there will be a way out...
According to Mr. Pham Anh Tuan - Head of Gia Khanh village, Thuong Phuc commune, Ms. Tran Thi Hung's situation is a particularly difficult case in the locality.
Ms. Hung has lived alone for many years, with accumulated illnesses, meager income and no stable source of support. Although the local government regularly visits and encourages her, that is still not enough for her to overcome the days of shortage. That situation really needs the joint efforts of philanthropists to help her life become less difficult," Mr. Tuan said.
