Reviving after floods
10 days after the historic flood, Dien Dien commune is still littered with mud and garbage, many households face great loss of property and livelihoods. Many elderly people in the commune said: "In nearly 100 years, I have never witnessed a flood with water rising like this".
The flash floods have isolated hundreds of households, caused severe property damage, and people's lives have fallen into difficult circumstances. Mr. Bui Ngoc Sang (60 years old, Tay village, Dien Dien commune) works as a lottery ticket seller to make a living but has to take a break for more than a week because his legs are not yet healthy and pain after the flood. His previously empty house is now even more trong and degraded, the walls are leaking, and the smell of mud is still strong.
With the support of a bed from the Golden Heart Social Charity Fund, Mr. Sang temporarily placed it in the mud-clearing house to take a break. He choked up as he shared: "The support gift of 2 million VND from the representative of the Golden Heart Social and Cultural Fund helps me feel secure with living expenses when I can't sell lottery tickets again".
Bringing the Golden Heart to the People
Strolling through the village road littered with garbage after the flood, Mr. Nguyen Tuan and his wife, Nam 1 village, Dien Dien commune, are cleaning up their mud-filled house. The flood on November 19-20 submerged his house almost to the roof. After nearly 60 years of living here, it was the first time he and his wife had to go through such a big flood.
Breaking tiles on the roof for a whole day and night, Mr. Tuan was tired of many diseases on his body, while his wife, Ms. Huynh Thi Tuyet Huong, had a terminal kidney disease, and when she went to the house, there was nothing left. Cattle, property, belongings and rice were completely damaged.
The Golden Heart Social Support Fund has presented 2 million VND to Mr. Tuan's family, helping Ms. Huong prepare for a new dialysis. Along with that, 23 other households that suffered heavy damage during the flood were also given 2 million VND by the fund to each household, supporting people to temporarily stabilize their lives in the immediate future.
In the days after the natural disaster, the headquarters of Dien Dien Commune People's Committee still left traces of the severity of the flood. Ms. Dao Thi Huong - Vice Chairman of the Fatherland Front Committee of Dien Dien commune - said: "After the flood, the locality is focusing all its efforts to support people to overcome the consequences, clean up the environment and restore essential daily activities".
According to Ms. Dao Thi Huong, the timely support of the Golden Heart Social and Cultural Fund not only helps the locality have more resources to overcome the consequences, but also is a great encouragement for people in the most difficult times.
The recent flood is considered one of the most severe natural disasters in Khanh Hoa, causing many residential areas to be isolated and suffered heavy damage. Amidst those losses, the companionship of benefactors and volunteer hearts has lit up hope. Dien Dien will then turn the fields green. But perhaps, the warmest thing that the people here bring is the feeling of sharing at the right time when they are most vulnerable.
The Golden Heart Social Charity Fund has donated a total of 450 million VND to workers and people in Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa and Lam Dong provinces. In Khanh Hoa alone, the Fund representative continued to donate 100 million VND to Tay Nha Trang ward and Dien Dien commune - two localities that recorded heavy damage due to prolonged deep flooding.
