Typhoon Josie changes direction, warning of strong winds and rough seas in many areas

Typhoon Josie is forecast to weaken rapidly after entering the Philippines, but the Southwest monsoon continues to cause rough seas and strong winds in many areas.

On July 14 (local time), according to the latest weather forecast from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), tropical storm Josie is moving northwest and is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on the evening of July 15 or early morning of July 16, before weakening into a tropical depression and then a low pressure area.

Previously, this weather system formed offshore in the east of the Visayas region in the form of tropical depression Haishen. In just a short time, the tropical depression strengthened into a tropical storm with sustained winds from 65km/h, then entered PAR and was named Josie by PAGASA locally, according to naming regulations for tropical cyclones affecting the Philippines.

PAGASA said that the center of Typhoon Josie is located about 1,085km east of the Eastern Visayas region, with maximum sustained winds of 65km/h, gusts up to 80km/h and central pressure of 1,002 hPa.

The storm is moving in a northwest direction at a speed of about 25km/h, with strong wind circulation expanding its radius to about 480km from the storm center.

Although it has entered PAR, PAGASA believes that Josie is unlikely to directly affect the mainland of the Philippines during his time in this area.

No storm warning signals have been issued on Philippine territory.

However, the Southwest monsoon (Habagat) continues to cause strong to very strong winds in many areas, especially in Ilocos, Cordillera, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Cavite, Batangas and Occidental Mindoro.

At sea, waves from 2 - 3m high still appear in many coastal areas west of the Philippines. PAGASA recommends that fishing boats, wooden boats and small vehicles limit going out to sea if they do not meet operating conditions.

According to forecasts, Josie will continue to move northward on July 14 before gradually moving northeast. Due to unfavorable atmospheric conditions, the storm is forecast to weaken into a tropical depression within 12 hours, then continue to decrease in intensity and is likely to dissipate into a low pressure area on July 15.

PAGASA said it will continue to closely monitor Josie's developments and release new news bulletins to help people proactively respond if there are changes in the intensity or direction of movement of this weather system.
