The rainy season could begin as early as the first week of June, bringing the southwest monsoon and tropical storms, the latest weather forecast from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
Based on our assessment, the rainy season is approaching. It may start in the first week of June, and this is also the time for the hurricane season to start," PAGASA leader Nathaniel Servando told Manila Times.
PAGASA identifies the typhoon season as the time when most typhoons form or enter the Philippine Forecast Area (PAR), typically between July and October every year.
The head of PAGASA also stressed that the sudden heavy rains occurring in some areas of the Philippines are due to thunderstorms, especially in the late afternoon or at night.
These are signs that the rainy season is approaching, said Mr. Servando.
According to the official of the Philippine weather agency, the Philippines is currently in a neutral state of ENSO ( El Nino - Southern fluctuations), meaning there is no active El Nino or La Nina phenomenon.
With about 10 to 19 typhoons expected to enter the Philippine forecast area from now until the last quarter of 2025, Mr. Servando said that PAGASA is forecasting strong typhoons this year.
We expect two to three typhoons to appear in June and August, which are likely to record the largest number, he said, without giving specific figures.
From June to September, rainfall is expected to be approximately average over most parts of the Philippines, according to PAGASA. However, from October onwards, moderate to heavy rains will increase significantly, Mr. Nathaniel Servando warned.

According to the Manila Bulletin, the rainy season is about to begin as the southwest wind is expected to blow over western Luzon this weekend.
The southwest wind is forecast to bring scattered showers and thunderstorms to West Luzon in the Philippines, especially Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas, Zambales, Bataan, Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte starting from May 30.
"The southwest wind will become the main wind in the areas west of Luzon this weekend. This change will increase the likelihood of scattered showers, especially in the afternoon and evening in these areas, said PAGASA weather expert Daniel James Villamil.
PAGASA said the rainy season began as at least seven of its 13 main monitoring stations recorded 25 mm of rain for five consecutive days, with winds turning southwest.
Forecaster Villamil also noted that the weather phenomenon that is adjacent to hot and cold air will continue to cause scattered rain and thunderstorms in the northernmost part of Luzon from May 28 to May 31.
Meanwhile, rainfall will decrease in Palawan, Visayas and Mindanao as the tropical convergence zone weakens and the easterly winds dominate on May 28 and 29.
