The latest typhoon news from SCMP said that Director of the Hong Kong Meteorological Station (China) Chan Pak-wai predicted that the 2025 typhoon season will be longer than usual and could last until November.
The forecast bulletin of the local weather forecasting agency said that Hong Kong (China) is likely to welcome 5-8 tropical storms throughout 2025.
This year, the typhoon season in Hong Kong (China) is expected to start in June or earlier and end in October or later, Chan Pak-wai said at a press conference on weather forecasts for 2025.
He added: "About five to eight tropical storms are expected to enter the 500 km radius of Hong Kong (China) during the year. This is a normal level to a higher than normal level".
With a radius of 500 km from Hong Kong (China), most of the five to eight typhoons will be storms in the South China Sea or near the South China Sea.

Hong Kong (China) weather experts point out that this year's typhoon season could last until November, similar to the 2024 typhoon season, but for other reasons. The 2024 storm season will last longer due to the weakening of global climate phenomenon El Nino.
This summer, temperatures in the central equatorial and eastern Pacific are returning to normal while temperatures in the western Pacific are still unusually warm. As a result, there will be more storms," he said.
However, Director of the Hong Kong Meteorological Station Chan Pak-wai also stressed that the typhoon season every year is "unique" and the Hong Kong Meteorological Station (China) does not have any extended, long-term data to predict atmospheric conditions.
"When storms appear later than expected, there is no single explanation that people agree with," he said, stressing that there are many different factors that can influence the development of the 2025 hurricane season.
