On the evening of November 19, local time (ie the morning of November 20, Hanoi time), the plane carrying Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his wife and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation arrived at Las Americas airport, Santo Domingo capital, starting an official visit to the Dominican Republic from November 19-21, 2024 at the invitation of President of the Dominican Republic Luis Abinader and his wife.
This is the first time a key leader of Vietnam has visited the Dominican Republic; demonstrating Vietnam's respect and desire to continue to consolidate and deepen the fine solidarity, friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and the Dominican Republic, towards the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2025.
The visit takes place in the context of both countries' efforts towards sustainable development, with Vietnam aiming to become a developed, high-income country by 2045. At the same time, the Dominican Republic, under the leadership of President Luis Abinader and the new National Assembly (2024-2028), is implementing sustainable socio-economic development strategies, promoting economic diplomacy and attracting investment.
The Dominican Republic highly appreciates Vietnam's achievements and position in serving as a bridge to Southeast Asia and Asia, and wishes to further promote bilateral relations, especially cooperation in the fields of oil and gas, energy (with PVN), telecommunications (with Viettel), construction of cement and sanitary ware factories (with Viglacera), electric vehicles (with Vinfast), information technology and semiconductors (with Viettel/FPT).
Vietnam News Agency quoted Vietnamese Ambassador to Cuba and the Dominican Republic Le Quang Long as saying that in the coming years, the potential for cooperation between Vietnam and the Dominican Republic is very promising and diverse. The two countries aim to increase trade turnover to 500 million USD in the next 4-5 years, through promoting investment cooperation and expanding markets for each country's key products.
Vietnamese businesses investing in countries in the Latin American - Caribbean region can also take advantage of the opportunity to access the market in the Dominican Republic and from there expand to other markets in the region.
The two sides can also promote cooperation in the health sector, especially in disease control and improving public health capacity; organize many cultural and educational exchange programs, promote technology sharing in renewable energy and telecommunications, implement environmental protection projects and improve the efficiency of resource management and exploitation.
In the international arena, Vietnam and the Dominican Republic continue to support and cooperate closely in organizations such as the United Nations, the WTO and other multilateral forums to promote sustainable development goals, protect peace, stability and regional and international development.
