According to VNA, after successfully concluding the working trip to attend the G20 Summit and bilateral activities in Brazil, on the evening of November 19, local time (ie the morning of November 20, Hanoi time), the plane carrying Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his wife and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation arrived at Las Americas airport, capital of Santo Domingo, to begin an official visit to the Dominican Republic at the invitation of Dominican President Luis Abinader and his wife.
This is the first time a key leader of Vietnam has visited the Dominican Republic; demonstrating Vietnam's respect and desire to continue to consolidate and deepen the fine solidarity, friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and the Dominican Republic, towards the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The welcoming ceremony for Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his wife and the Vietnamese delegation on an official visit to Dominican Republic was solemnly held at the airport with the presence of Dominican Minister of Agriculture Limber Cruz, Dominican Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Jose Julio Gomez, Dominican Republic Ambassador to Vietnam Jaime Francisco Rodriguez, Director of the Protocol Department, Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs Francisco Jose Cantizano Nadal, Vietnamese Ambassador to Cuba and Dominican Republic Le Quang Long and staff of the Vietnamese Embassy in Cuba and Dominican Republic.
During the visit, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh is expected to hold talks with the President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader Corona. He will also meet with the President of the Senate and the President of the Dominican House of Representatives. Additionally, he is scheduled to receive leaders of Dominican left-wing parties and attend the inauguration ceremony of the Ho Chi Minh Monument in Santo Domingo, where he will lay a wreath. Furthermore, the Prime Minister will participate in the Vietnam-Dominican Business Forum, deliver a policy speech at the Dominican Diplomatic Academy, and engage in other important activities.
Vietnam - Dominican Republic relations were founded in 1965, when President Ho Chi Minh met with revolutionary, Professor Juan Bosch, the first President of the democratic Dominican Republic, when he visited Hanoi to attend the Conference of Latin American countries in solidarity with Vietnam. The two countries officially established diplomatic relations at the Ambassadorial level on July 7, 2005.
After nearly 20 years, the diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Dominican Republic have developed well. Although the economic and trade relations between the two countries account for a small proportion of the total trade turnover of each country, they have recorded rapid development.
Two-way trade turnover has grown significantly over the years, rising from 36.5 million USD in 2013 to nearly 150.2 million USD in 2022. By 2023, it reached 95.8 million USD, and in the first nine months of 2024, it amounted to 56 million USD.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's visit to Dominican Republic this time is a historic event in the relationship between the two countries, contributing to consolidating political trust, deepening multifaceted cooperation, making bilateral relations more substantive and effective; creating momentum to promote the expansion of economic, trade and investment relations between Vietnam and Dominican Republic, especially in potential areas such as agriculture, industry, construction materials production, export processing zone business, energy - oil and gas, telecommunications and tourism.
