On December 2, South Korean prosecutors said they would not appeal the appellate court's ruling, declaring a worker innocent in the theft of two snacks worth 1,050 won (about 20,000 VND) from the refrigerator at the company's office last year.
The ruling, which was originally issued on November 27, reversed the first instance ruling that had sentenced the 41-year-old man to 50,000 won (nearly 1 million VND), causing much debate in public opinion nationwide.
The defendant was prosecuted for taking a ChocoPie and a Custard at a logistics company in Wanju district, about 190km south of Seoul, and then eating it without permission in January last year.
Jeonju District Prosecutors said they respect the appellate court's decision and will not file an appeal to the Supreme Court, which would officially close the case.
We will continue to fulfill our core mission and listen to the voice of the public, the Jeonju District Attorney Generals announcement said.
The prosecutor initially proposed punishing the worker, but later asked the appellate court to postpone the verdict, after summoning a citizen committee to consider whether their handling was appropriate amid strong public opposition.
