Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova declared that Western Europe could become the "first victim" if President Volodymyr Zelensky used "nuclear extortion" in the event that Ukraine gained access to nuclear weapons.
The statement was made in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper, where Zakharova warned that if Kiev had nuclear capabilities, the regional security situation would change in an extremely dangerous direction.
He will not only demand money and weapons, but also demand conditions to maintain his power," the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman said, referring to President Zelensky.
The statement from the Russian side was made in the context of Russia-Ukraine tensions continuing to escalate and the parties increasing accusations against each other. Moscow believes that the biggest danger lies not only in the battlefield, but also in Kiev's ability to use strategic deterrent tools if supported by the West.
Previously, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) also announced that Britain and France are "actively working" to support Ukraine in accessing technology and means related to nuclear weapons. According to the SVR, the plans include secret transfer of components, equipment and technology from Europe.
One of the options mentioned is the TN-75 small nuclear warhead - the type used on the French M51 submarine-launched ballistic missile.
To date, the US and NATO allies still affirm that they do not provide nuclear weapons to Ukraine. However, accusations and warnings from Russia show that this issue is becoming one of the most sensitive hotspots of the conflict.
