Parliamentary diplomacy pushes Vietnam - Senegalese relations to new heights

Thanh Hà |

Politburo member and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man paid an official visit to the Republic of Senegal from July 22-24. This is the highest level visit ever in nearly 60 years, marking a turning point in Vietnam-Senegale relations.

7th Vice Chairman of the National Assembly of Senegal Samba Dang shared with VNA that the visit of National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man is of special significance in reshaping bilateral relations. This important visit of the National Assembly Chairman "brings the mark of parliamentary diplomacy". "We especially welcome the initiative to establish the Vietnam - Senegalese Friendship Parliamentarians' Group, contributing to promoting bilateral cooperation through delegation exchanges, maintaining high-level contacts, sharing legislative experience and coordinating at multilateral forums" - Mr. Samba Dang said.

According to the 7th Vice President of the Sen Sen Senate, the strategic importance of cooperation between the two countries can be seen through the development of bilateral trade. He pointed out that in the first 4 months of 2025, Vietnam's export turnover to Senegal reached 43.43 million USD, nearly equal to the whole year of 2024 with 43.91 million USD. Senegal depends on Vietnam to meet 10% of rice consumption demand - a commodity that accounts for nearly 60% of Vietnam's total export turnover to Senegal. In contrast, Senegal's exports are mainly raw materials (accounting for 87% of total export turnover to Vietnam), fish flour, seafood and nuts.

"These figures are typical evidence of a typical South-South cooperation model, based on a common prosperity foundation," he said. The 7th Vice Chairman of the Sen Sen Senate affirmed: "Senegal highly appreciates the signing of memorandums of understanding between ministries and branches of the two countries in the fields of agriculture, trade and transportation. As a member of parliament, I especially welcome the draft agreement between the two National Assemblies, which will contribute to creating favorable conditions for investment, while maintaining a sustainable dialogue channel between the two peoples".

According to Ambassador Tran Quoc Khanh, the visit is expected to open up new prospects for cooperation, promote friendship and bring cooperation between the two countries into deeper and more substantial depth. In addition to the key content of strengthening cooperation between the two legislative bodies, the visit will also create conditions to promote cooperation in many other areas such as trade, agriculture, science, technology and people-to-people exchanges.

"In particular, cooperation within the framework of multilateral organizations of which both countries are members is also an important content. Recently, Senegal has actively supported Vietnam in nominating the Yen Tu - Con Son Kiep Bac scenic spot as a World Cultural Heritage at the 47th session of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UN UNESCO). This is a vivid demonstration of the effective coordination between the two countries in the international arena and will also be a focused cooperation content, aiming to further strengthen in the coming time" - the Ambassador pointed out.
