Turkey promotes solutions to reduce maritime tensions in the Black Sea

In a television interview on September 19 (local time), Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that Ukraine and Russia are having "difficult to reconcile" stances on the Black Sea situation, in the context of ongoing fighting in this region.

To ensure maritime safety, Ankara has sent the two sides a plan to limit attacks on civilian ships. According to Mr. Fidan, both Moscow and Kiev have responded and exchanges are continuing. However, some requests from both sides still need to be discussed to be able to move towards a common plan.

According to Mr. Fidan, one of Turkey's priorities is to maintain the transportation of grain through the Black Sea. This is an important export item of both Russia and Ukraine, and is imported by many countries around the world. However, some related issues still need to be resolved to ensure this operation.

Turkey's diplomatic initiative was launched after attacks on merchant ships in the Black Sea increased in recent months. Many Turkish ships have also become targets.
