Magnus Carlsen won against Alireza Firouzja in the chess final at the 2025 eSports World Cup (EWC).

The final match took place in Riyadh (S well-off Saudi Arabia) on the evening of August 1. In the first half, Carlsen took the lead and won the opening game with a bold pilot car catch in the middle.

After 2 draws, he ended the half with a shot, bringing a 3-1 victory. Although Firouzja is a member of the home team Falcons, the audience still gave the world's number one player a round of applause.

The second half started with a surprise when Carlsen lost, despite having a big advantage in terms of game situation and time. The mistake in handling the code caused him to lose his belongings and could not turn the situation around. However, that was just a rare moment where Firouzja made a difference. Carlsen quickly returned, winning consecutively in the next 3 games, thereby ending the match with the same score of 3-1 in both sets.

For the championship, Carlsen received a prize of 250,000 USD (about 6.15 billion VND). Firouzja ranked 2nd, receiving 190,000 USD (about 4.67 billion VND). This is the first time chess has participated in the eSports World Cup, with a total prize of up to 1.5 million USD divided equally among 16 players in four days of competition.

Sharing after the match, Carlsen said: "I feel very good in form in this tournament and am confident to win. Everything went perfectly. He hopes chess will continue to be included in future eSports World Cups and hopes the organizers will expand the competition area to welcome more spectators.
