According to information obtained by Lao Dong, the Vietnam Athletics Team has taken gender samples of some athletes preparing to participate in the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand. Head of the Athletics Department (Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports) - Mr. Nguyen Duc Nguyen said: "The taking of samples for testing is correct. However, this is confidential information, we want the best assurance for Vietnamese athletes.
The specific number of athletes who are sampled for testing was not disclosed. The sample was tested at a reputable hospital that meets standards in Vietnam.
The World Athletics Federation has issued a notice in July 2025 that it will apply mandatory gender testing to athletes participating in the women's category in the official competitions of this organization. The implementation will start from the 2025 World Championship (starting on September 13.
The test is an athlete for the SRY gene test sample. The testing method is to take lining samples or dried blood samples to analyze the results of theSRY gene. If the athlete's test sample is positive for theSRY gene, they will not be allowed to compete in the women's category. In the case of athletes with a female developmental disorder (scientific name Disorders of sex development - DSD) with a body producing high testosterone, this testosterone level must be lowered to qualify.
Currently, the Organizing Committee of the 33rd SEA Games Athletics has not officially announced whether it will conduct a gender test for athletes participating in the women's category or not. However, the Vietnam Athletics Team still does this to ensure that the athletes can participate in their women's category before competing in the Congress.
Previously, athlete Huynh Thi My Tien, who had a special chance to participate in the 2025 World Championship, had to take a gender test sample according to the regulations of the World Athletics Federation and ensure competition conditions.
The 33rd SEA Games Athletics Regulations stipulate that each country can register a maximum of 57 male and 57 female athletes to participate in the events.
