For the first time, Vietnam Athletics has its own Development Project with many key contents. In particular, the high-performance target of Vietnam's athletics in the 2026 - 2035 period is: "In the top 10 at the ASIAD, in the top 2 leading countries at the SEA Games.
Winning 1 gold medal, 1 silver medal, 2 bronze medals at ASIAD 2026; Winning 2 gold medals, 2 silver medals, 3 bronze medals at ASIAD 2030; Winning 2 gold medals, 3 silver medals, 4 bronze medals at ASIAD 2034.
At the 2028 Olympics: Strive to win 1 participation standard; At the 2032 Olympics: Strive to win 2 Olympic participation standards".
For the 2036-2045 period, Vietnam's athletics focuses on the goal: "In the top 7 at the ASIAD, in the top 2 leading countries at specific SEA Games:
Continue to stabilize the group of key events that have been invested in training in the 2026-2035 period and promptly review, evaluate and supplement athletes and competition content with potential to discover and develop factors capable of competing for medals at the Olympics and ASIAD.
Forming a system of training athletes in all routes from the movement, schools to the national team. Applying science and technology creates a breakthrough in selecting and training athletes.
Improve the quality of coaches and professional staff through domestic and foreign training and fostering courses.
In addition, Vietnam Athletics will aim to build a plan to host the Southeast Asian Championship in 2027 or 2029; host the Southeast Asian Youth Championship in 2030; host the Asian Youth Championship for the period 2031-2033.
At the ASIAD arena, Vietnam's athletics won the first gold medal at the 2018 18th ASIAD with the achievement of the women's long jump event by athlete Bui Thi Thu Thao.
