On July 5, in Atlanta (USA), the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup quarter-final between PSG and Bayern Munich witnessed a collision that caused midfielder Jamal Musiala to suffer a serious injury and leave the field in pain.
At the end of the first half, in an attempt to save the ball from a strong pass from Michael Olise, Musiala rushed towards the PSG goal and was blocked by Willian Pacho and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who rushed out to hug the ball.
The collision deformed the German midfielder's left ankle. Mercedes Benz Stadium was quiet for a moment. Many players turned away, even packing their shirts to avoid witnessing the scene. Donnarumma fell into the penalty area, then hugged his face and left the field in disappointment.
On July 6, the PSG goalkeeper shared a photo of himself hugging his head after the match on social media, with the message: "All my prayers and best wishes are for you, Musiala".
According to French media, after the match, Donnarumma went into Bayern's dressing room to directly ask Musiala. However, the midfielder born in 2003 was taken to the hospital for injury check-ups, so the two did not meet each other.
The incident angered Bayern manager Vincent Kompany, while goalkeeper Manuel Neuer criticized Donnarumma: "It was a situation where he didn't need to rush in like that. It was a reckless act. He accepts the risk of causing the opponent to get injured."
On the other hand, PSG coach Luis Enrique defended his student, saying that Donnarumma did not intentionally play badly and sent wishes for Musiala's recovery. He also said he is focusing on helping the 26-year-old goalkeeper regain his spirit ahead of the semi-final against Real Madrid at MetLife on July 9.
Bayern later confirmed that Musiala had a broken collarbone and a weak ankle, requiring surgery. The German midfielder could be out for four to five months.
