The weightlifting event of ASEAN Para Games 13 entered the first weight classes in the afternoon of January 21 local time in Nakhon Ratchasima (Thailand).
Bodybuilder Le Van Cong won the first gold medal for the Vietnamese disabled weightlifting team at the Games.
Participating in the men's 49kg weight class, Le Van Cong continued to maintain his best form and reached the lift weight of 178kg. The achievement was recognized as the best in the results of 6 athletes competing in the same event, and Le Van Cong was awarded a gold medal.
Second place, receiving a silver medal is Abdul Hadi (Indonesia) with a result of 177kg, and third place is weightlifter Butprom Boonyang (Thailand, 115kg). At ASEAN Para Games 12 held in Cambodia, Le Van Cong won a gold medal while Abdul Hadi held the runner-up position in the men's 49kg weight class.
For individual athlete Le Van Cong, the gold medal at ASEAN Para Games 13 is the 8th time the athlete has conquered the arena of the Southeast Asian Para Games. Previously, Le Van Cong had won gold medals at the events held in 2007, 2009, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2022 and 2023.
In weightlifting, weightlifter Chau Hoang Tuyet Loan won a silver medal in the women's 55kg weight class when she achieved a lift weight of 103kg.
On the same day of competition, the Vietnamese disabled sports swimming team had 7 gold medals respectively from Vo Huynh Dang Khoa in the men's 400m freestyle event (injury class S8), Nguyen Van Hanh (100m breaststroke, SB11), Ha Van Hiep (50m backstroke, S4), Trinh Thi Bich Nhu (100m breaststroke, SB4-SB5), Vi Thi Hang (100m women's freestyle, S7), Le Thi Dung (100m women's freestyle, S8), Vi Thi Hang (50m women's backstroke, S6-S7).
Athlete Vi Thi Hang broke the ASEAN Para Games record in the women's 50m backstroke event with a time of 45 seconds 63 (old record: 49 seconds 13).
