Right from the first matches, in the first tournament with the Vietnam National Team, Nguyen Xuan Son made a strong and successful impression. In addition to winning the championship with his teammates, he was also the best player and top scorer of the tournament. However, it was very unfortunate for the 27-year-old striker when he did not finish the tournament completely due to a serious injury.
Returning to Vietnam, the Brazilian player quickly underwent surgery, receiving great attention from the Government leaders, the Vietnam Football Federation, the club, many businesses as well as fans. Currently, Xuan Son is entering the recovery phase, but with the condition and severity of the injury, the time to recover and return to competition is estimated to be about 6 to 9 months.
The question is, will the Nam Dinh Steel Club and Xuan Son receive compensation from FIFA? According to the regulations of the World Football Federation, players who are injured while on national team duty can be paid a maximum of 7.5 million Euros, with compensation calculated on a daily basis, up to 20,548 Euros/day. The compensation is based on the player's fixed salary, including mandatory social security fees, excluding bonuses, lump sums or variable amounts.
However, to receive compensation, certain conditions must be met. Firstly, only in cases of injuries lasting more than 28 consecutive days (the maximum compensation is paid for 365 days after the first 28 days of injury). FIFA does not consider cases of death or permanent disability.
Second, and more importantly, the player’s injury must have occurred in a national team match scheduled by FIFA, which is part of the FIFA competition calendar. Here, although the ASEAN Championship is part of the FIFA competition system (in Group A), it is only counted for points and is not included in the FIFA Days. Therefore, it is likely that Nam Dinh and Xuan Son will not receive compensation from FIFA.
