Vietnam Sports towards ASIAD 20

HOÀI VIỆT |

Vietnamese sports are in the process of professional preparation for the 33rd SEA Games. But right after that, we continue to find the best force to participate in the 20th Asian Games in 2026 (ASIAD 20).

Enhancing your position means having a high ranking at ASIAD

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Department of Physical Education and Sports of Vietnam are developing many important contents as a basis for early completion of the Draft Program for developing key sports to prepare for participation in the Olympics and ASIAD for the period 2026 - 2046.

Developing content for investment in key sports groups for the ASIAD and Olympic arenas is for the managers of the Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports to find solutions to win Gold Medals in the above arenas.

The sports industry has organized 2 important seminars on high-performance sports, including the Conference on orientation for developing high-performance sports until 2030 (held in December 2023) and the Conference on implementing the Sports - Physical Training Development Strategy to 2030, with a vision to 2045 (November 2024) and collected many contributions. Which option will help Vietnamese sports improve their achievements to affirm their position in Asia cannot be answered soon.

The ASIAD arena holds important value for the continent's sports, including us. The ASIAD arena is always a place that attracts the top players in the continent to participate. Vietnamese sports have participated in this arena through many competitions.

For each participation period, we understand that winning a Gold Medal at the ASIAD for Vietnamese sports is not easy, even if the best faces participate, former Deputy Director General of the General Department of Physical Education and Sports - Mr. Tran Duc Phan once discussed.

Up to now, the Asian Olympic Council (OCA) has announced the official sports of the 20th Asian Games (ASIAD). 20. In more than a year, the congress will take place in Japan. Therefore, preparations must start from now.

Are SEA Games athletes eligible for the ASIAD Gold Medal?

Vietnamese sports have achieved 205 Gold Medals, 125 Silver Medals, 116 Bronze Medals to top the total number of SEA Games 31 medals in Vietnam. At the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia, we topped the total rankings with the results of 136 Gold Medals, 105 Silver Medals, 114 Bronze Medals.

However, despite sending the best force with many athletes who have won SEA Games Gold Medals, at the 19th ASIAD (October 2023), we have only won 3 Gold Medals, 5 Silver Medals, 19 Bronze Medals (ranked 21/41th overall).

The professional distance between the ASIAD and the SEA Games is the difference. Asia's top players always attend the ASIAD and compete for a medal in each competition, which is fierce.

I would like to call it fierce because many world-class athletes in the event and sport are present at the ASIAD, so Vietnamese athletes must directly compete with them, sports expert Nguyen Hong Minh (former Director of the Department of High Performance Sports 1, General Department of Physical Education and Sports) analyzed.

The Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports plans to send a force of about 971 members to participate in the 33rd SEA Games with the goal of striving to win from 80 to 100 Gold Medals.

But clearly, the coaching staff of the national sports teams cannot confirm for sure which of our 33rd SEA Games athletes will be the athletes winning the 20th ASIAD medal in 2026 (not to mention the Gold Medal).
