According to Resolution No. 60-NQ/TW, dated April 12, 2025, at the 11th Conference of the 13th Party Central Committee, the merger of An Giang and Kien Giang provinces, called An Giang province, the political and administrative center is located in Kien Giang province.
On April 28, the 33rd Session (special session) of the Kien Giang Provincial People's Council approved the project to merge with An Giang province, establish the new An Giang province ( Administrative center located in Rach Gia city).
After the merger, An Giang province has an area of over 9,888 km2 (the province with the largest area in the Western region), a population of nearly 5 million people, with 102 communes and wards, including 3 special zones, including: Phu Quoc Special Zone, Tho Chau and Kien Hai.
The total number of employees of An Giang province after the merger is 29,911 people. Of which, the current staff of An Giang province is 16,939 people, Kien Giang is 12,972 staff.
After reviewing, the total number of public headquarters (provincial level) of the two provinces before the arrangement was 876. Of which, it is expected that 718 headquarters will continue to be used; 40 unused headquarters and 118 headquarters with other options.
The People's Committees of An Giang and Kien Giang provinces will coordinate to develop a plan to continue to arrange, use, and transfer to other agencies and units for use or organize property auctions according to regulations; avoid the situation of abandoned headquarters, causing waste.
According to the project, the number of cadres, civil servants and officials of An Giang province after the maximum consolidation does not exceed the total number of payrolls of An Giang and Kien Giang first to consolidate and streamlining with restructuring, improving the quality of the team according to the roadmap, within 5 years.
After the local government of An Giang province comes into operation, based on the population size, natural area, functions, tasks, and powers of the province, to build job positions and submit them to competent authorities to assign staff to the province according to regulations.
