Prime Ministers of Vietnam and Malaysia are deeply concerned about Cambodia-Thailand tensions

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed deep concern about the recent tensions between Cambodia and Thailand.

On the afternoon of December 12, Politburo member and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had a phone call with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to discuss the bilateral relations between the two countries and some recent emerging regional and international issues.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expressed his pleasure at having an interview with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim right after the sideline meeting of the G20 Summit (November 2025).

The Prime Minister highly appreciated the two Prime Ministers' regular phone calls to promptly coordinate and share information on issues of mutual concern, demonstrating increasingly high political trust between the two countries in general and between the two sides' senior leaders in particular, in line with the spirit of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Discussing cooperation directions in the coming time, the two Prime Ministers expressed their delight at the positive developments in the Vietnam - Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in recent times, and agreed to soon officially approve the Action Program to implement the Vietnam - Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for the period 2026 - 2030 to propose specific orientations for each pillar area; strive to soon bring bilateral trade turnover to 20 billion USD in a more balanced direction.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh suggested that the two sides continue to strengthen cooperation in the fields of rice, sea and ocean trade, prioritizing oil and gas cooperation between Vietnam's PetroVietnam Group and Malaysia's Petronas Group, joint fishing cooperation and the prevention of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Discussing regional and international issues of mutual concern, the two Prime Ministers expressed deep concern about the recent tense developments between Cambodia and Thailand; hoped that the two sides would restrain themselves, not use force, conduct dialogue, and resolve peace; agreed to closely coordinate with other ASEAN countries to strengthen solidarity, maintain ASEAN's central role, promote ASEAN mechanisms to promote dialogue, and contribute to maintaining peace, stability and cooperation in the region.
