On January 27, 1995, Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet signed Decree No. 16/CP to establish Ho Chi Minh City National University (VNU-HCM) with the mission of being a center for training, scientific research and technology transfer in many fields, fields, high quality, on par with the region, gradually reaching international standards, playing a pioneering and core role in the Vietnamese higher education system, effectively serving the cause of innovation and development of the country.
On the 30-year journey of construction and development, VNU-HCM has achieved outstanding results in organizational development, autonomy, training of highly qualified human resources, scientific research, technology transfer and community service, making an important contribution to the process of integration and general socio-economic development of the country, meeting the expectations assigned by the Party and the State.
From 3 member universities with 3 fields of natural science, social science and humanities, engineering and technology, up to now, the VNU-HCM system has expanded to fields such as agriculture, pedagogical, health Sciences, arts, contributing to the completion of the multi-disciplinary, multi-disciplinary model, expanding even in space when there are new members in the Mekong Delta.
VNU-HCM has trained and provided nearly 400,000 bachelors, engineers, architects, doctors, pharmacists, masters, and doctors; is the cradle of training, providing a source of strategic-level cadres for the country.
VNU-HCM is a pioneer in piloting the opening of new training majors: Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Chips - Semiconductors, bachelor's programs, talented engineers; leading the country in the number of programs ranked in the world.
In 2025, VNU-HCM has 17 majors and 3 fields ranked, including 14 majors in the top 500 in the world; leading the country with 154 programs assessed according to international standards. The University Admission Competency Assessment Test is increasing in number, reaching 136,004 candidates registered and used by more than 100 domestic universities and colleges for admission in 2024.
