Within the framework of the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC 3) in France on June 9, Politburo member, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and President of Iraq Abdul Latif Rashid co-chaired the Summit on continental Delta regions affected by climate change.
The conference was attended by nearly 100 delegates including leaders of countries such as France, the Netherlands, Thailand, Bangladesh... and representatives of international organizations.
According to statistics, the continental plains account for only 0.65% of the global land area but are home to nearly 4.5% of the world's population and account for about 6% of the total global food output.
Speaking at the conference, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that the continental plains are a place that preserves many cultural and ecological values and are a long-standing socio-economic support.
However, these are also areas that are heavily affected by climate change such as subsidence, salinity intrusion, biodiversity loss and environmental pollution.
The Prime Minister emphasized that adapting to climate change in the continental provinces is an urgent requirement and a historic mission.
The Prime Minister shared Vietnam's experience in adapting to climate change based on the motto "favorite", implementing policies to mobilize resources for infrastructure investment, developing green agriculture, converting the production model of 1 million hectares of rice, protecting cross-border water resources, with the support of development partners.
Vietnam strategically coordinates with countries to implement the "double goal": Ensuring food security and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The Prime Minister proposed 5 strategic solutions including: Inter-sectoral long-term planning, promoting indigenous knowledge combined with technology, promoting international cooperation, implementing green climate finance, and developing flexible standards for continental degradation.
Vietnam is ready to share experiences, participate in international cooperation initiatives and contribute to global efforts to adapt to climate change in the continental provinces.
The Prime Minister called on countries to unite and take action so that the plains continue to be the foundation for human prosperity.
Iranian President Abdul Latif Rashid stressed the role of the continental plains - the cradle of cultures - and called for urgent action to sustainably develop river and plain systems.
Colombian Ambassador Elizabeth Taylor emphasized solutions that are environmentally friendly, restore mangrove forests and prevent coastal erosion.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot shared two priorities: Water resource management and climate change, and called for the conference results to be turned into concrete action.
At the thematic discussion sessions, experts and policymakers assessed the current risks and proposed solutions based on natural foundations, applying technology to sustainably develop the continental provinces.
