Speaking at the 23rd meeting of the People's Council of Yen Bai Province, XIX, Mr. Ta Van Long - Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Council - said: In order to promptly approve the policy of arranging administrative units at the commune level and the policy of consolidating Lao Cai and Yen Bai province into a new province called Lao Cai province under the direction of the Prime Minister, the Standing Committee of the two provinces has established the Steering Committee of Yen Bai and Lao Bai.
The Joint Steering Committee has urgently directed departments, branches, sectors, agencies and units to develop component projects. Develop a project to arrange and merge Yen Bai province and Lao Cai province into Lao Cai province.
The two projects have been organized by the two localities to collect public opinions on the arrangement of administrative units at all levels to ensure publicity, democracy, and compliance with legal regulations; the People's Councils at the commune and district levels have held meetings to approve the policy.
At the meeting, the People's Councils of Yen Bai and Lao Cai connected an online transmission line for delegates of the two provinces to vote to approve the Resolution approving the policy of reorganizing commune-level administrative units of Lao Cai province in 2025; Resolution approving the policy of reorganizing Yen Bai and Lao Cai provinces into Lao Cai provinces.
As a result, 100% of the delegates of the two provinces voted to approve 2 Resolutions on the arrangement of administrative units at all levels.
Accordingly, there is a consensus on the implementation of merging the natural area and population of Yen Bai province and Lao Cai province to form a new provincial-level administrative unit, Lao Cai province.
The new Lao Cai province after the arrangement has a natural area of 13,256.92 km2 (reaching 165.7% of the prescribed standard) and a population of 1,656,590 people (reaching 184% of the prescribed standard). The new Lao Cai Provincial Political - Administrative Center is located in Yen Bai City, Yen Bai Province (currently).
Geographical location of the new Lao Cai province: Border of Tuyen Quang province, Phu Tho province, Son La province and Lai Chau province.
